    Antiquated management style

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee) Emeryville, CA

ProsGreat location in walking distance the Emeryville Public Market, the Amtrak station, free Emerygoround Bus service to BART, the Prizefighter bar, a lot of great people to work with, fun products to work on and fun work parties.

ConsUpper management does not seem to know what is going on in the trenches. They do not reward people for doing a good job while they are constantly having their backs against the walls and having to rely on shoddy work from overseas vendors and outsourced QA.

Advice to Senior ManagementStop listening to the managers and start listening to the workers. If a regular employee reports a manager to HR, there is a problem with the manager, not the employee. Especially one that had been there for 4 years prior and had been through 5 other department managers during that time.

The product are fun, the culture is terrible

    Senior Manager FP&A (Current Employee)

ProsYou want to work in the East Bay
    You like the products

ConsThe culture is all about second guessing and finding someone else to blame
Bad economics leads to bad business decisions
Boom & bust nature of the business means lack of job stability (from the CEO on down)

Advice to Senior ManagementPick and strategy and stick it out for the long-haul
Invest in what comes next. The product life-cycles are too short to get fixed and the current wave
The culture needs to empower teamwork and risk-taking (not backstabbing and second guessing)

Great products and talented people with diverse background and expertise

Senior Software Engineer (Current Employee) Emeryville, CA

Pros- There are talented and motivated people cross all departments
    - Friendly, open, and cooperative culture (in general)
    - The products are amazing
    - If treated properly, could become an even stronger company that others cannot easily replicate

Cons- Overly aggressive development schedules increase the risk and potentially lower the quality of the products
    - Management is too focused on marketing instead of quality of the products

Advice to Senior Management- Senior management need pay attention to overall direction instead of implementation details. Mid and lower management need to be empowered to figure out the best way to reach the overall goal.
    - Encourage individual creativity. Avoid micro-managing.
    - Promote cooperative and entrepreneurial culture.
    - Work on attracting and retaining talented people.

    Summer internship at LeapFrog

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsVery warm and receptive culture, even for lowly interns. The company went out of its way to provide an educational and fun learning environment. Interns were allowed to select projects and presentations that could contribute real value to their respective teams.

ConsEmeryville is a bit of a sleepy town. It's really small and there are not many choices for lunch within walking distance. Like many other companies, the day to day works seems driven by a steady stream of meetings, some of which are not essential for everyone. The company seemed to be taking steps to streamline the meeting schedule to make it more efficient for all departments.

Advice to Senior ManagementManagement does a great job structuring and running the intern program. I am glad to see the number of internships across departments grow from year to year.

Software Engineer (Current Employee) Emeryville, CA

    ProsBrand value. People love Leapfrog.
    Job is not cutthroat.
    Good upper management.

ConsCompensation is very low compared to market value.
Not very good for commute unless u stay in Oakland.
Career development is close to nil. They hire people from outside when people leave and promotions are rare!

Advice to Senior ManagementGive promotions to employess who are doing well.
There is no incentive for staying unless you have no career motives!
