I worked at LeapFrog as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

This was a helpful introduction to production in an industry I am interested in.

    Cons

Many of the hard skills related to proprietary software and they were not very transferrable.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to the ideas of interns! I had a bunch of ideas when I was an intern that later hit the market for companies like Mattel. These were ideas like creating physical toys to play on iPad screens or creating a plushy smart case to house iPad, which comes with a companion app for that plushy. Don't write off the ideas of interns because they are new to the industry. They have insight that tenured employees will remain oblivious to.

I worked at LeapFrog full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Good people, relaxed environment, plenty of work/life balance - LeapFrog is a workplace where people are friendly and family oriented so they give you optimal work/life balance to tend to your personal life. If you don't want to advance in your career and want to work 9-5, then this will be the right place for you.

    Cons

There is a lack of company direction with senior management. LeapFrog has a great foundation in helping a child achieve his/her full potential, but unfortunately management has not helped the company itself and their employees achieve THEIR full potential due to poor business decisions, guidance and structure. Lots of rah rah in meetings and in employee communications but other than that there is a lack of transparency in communicating the key issues a company has to face and how to overcome it. There is no room for advancement nor were there proper pathways communicated to individual contributors on how to grow to the next level. The job seems to be a dead end with no future to advance.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management should consider re-evaluating their business strategies and direction and give better transparency to their employees.

    Overall a great experience

I worked at LeapFrog as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

Passionate people, relaxed but motivated environment, smart people. Overall it was a fun place to intern. Got to work on a prototype with other interns from other departments, as well as projects for internal software development

    Cons

Nothing too much here. Most people have been at LeapFrog for a very long time. While that shows the company takes care of their employees, it isn't the optimal place to find other young developers out of college.

    Pros

    Great brand name
Summer hours (if you can take advantage of it)

    Cons

Your job description will be different from the one that you have interviewed
    Low salary
Horrible management overall (top to bottom)
    All promotions are VERY political
Lots of finger pointing, especially from lower to upper management
    Backstabbing culture
    Very old technology
    A "Do Nothing" HR department
Company needs better qualified management teams!!!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop saving a penny here and a penny there, because this will drive engineering cost up (a lot)
Take action on the list of issues from company meeting
Needs better product road map (not just developing three variance of the same product)

    Pros

Good atmosphere. It's definitely a great brand to work for, and has a stellar reputation, and dedicated employees. There is excellent creative energy.

    Cons

Product variation was becoming too narrow, and had a lot of room for improvement. Also, there wasn't as much room for growth as would've been ideal.

    I worked at LeapFrog full-time

    Pros

A lot of nice, talented people. Great building/environment/location, Great HR department. Inspiring CEO. Wonderful products.

    Cons

Lack of resources. In several areas of the company, there are checked out middle managers. Workloads extremely heavy for product marketing managers and creative marketing team due to budget constraints and inefficient allocation of resources. The workload is not sustainable and creates way too much stress even for the most talented and dedicated team players.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Yes you need to be lean and the company is in turnaround and everyone needs to contribute, but you should require your middle managers to engage with their staff, listen to their teams in the trenches and be watchful of the "YES" managers who are afraid to speak their mind with senior leaders. Require managers to position their best for success, support them, help them grow and get rid of those who are not contributing. Do not stand by while people are working 12 - 15 hour days and through lunch hours for months on end.
