    Pros

Great people, fantastic products, inspiring mission, and great CEO with a lot of passion -- really cares about the people and the company.

    Cons

Toy business has significant ups and downs (and company tends to be reactionary), CEO's passion, vision and perspective often don't seem to be reflected by upper management, lots of late decisions and churn.

    Advice to Management

Clarify path forward, maintain long-term vision, and make sure upper management is really all aligned with that vision.

    Pros

Strong brand with a great company mission and passionate employees that truly care about children and education. Products are high quality and consumers love the brand.

    Cons

Weak management in that they are old fashioned, boys club rooted in toy industry. They don't believe in long-term planning (as in more than 6 months of planning!) and they don't trust their employees. Unfortunately the company has had a volatile history that is embedded in it's DNA and year after year the board has not been able to put a strong management team in place.

    Pros

Fantastic people, there is a real bond and caring for others. Great mission and true belief and support of Learning Team. Decent hours if you can set boundaries.

    Cons

It's a total mess from a strategy and decision making perspective and everything is micromanaged through the very top by a boys club that is out of their element. The execs are too scared to admit they don't have a handle on the quick moving tech space or how to monetize their content outside of their shriveling ecosystem. The worker bees are pretty good but no one under the C-level is empowered to do anything - leaving VPs and Directors to waste tons of energy just guessing what the C-level wants rather that moving the ball forward themselves. When things go wrong, the C-level points fingers downward and never accepts any blame for the decisions they themselves made - that's shameful behavior. You have a lot of smart people very, very frustrated because they can't do their jobs and from the looks of LinkedIn activity, those folks are looking to jump ship immediately. The brand is being run into the ground.

    Advice to Management

Admit you are out of your element and empower current talent or hire-in fresh blood to create and execute a turnaround strategy. The world has changed quickly and running this company like a traditional physical toy company won't work if the biggest asset you have truly is digital content.

I have been working at LeapFrog full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great people who are truly trying to help. Good benefits. I believe they care about employees, on paper anyways.

    Cons

Management tries to do what's best, but between being a public company and taking it from behind from retailers, they miss the mark. No chance for bonuses or advancement.

    Advice to Management

Open your eyes. You keep trying the same thing over and over. It worked once and you just keep trying to do it again. You can't!

I have been working at LeapFrog full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Worthy mission. Some good people. Summers you get to leave early on Fridays. Starbucks on the same block as HQ. Easy to reach from SF (just across the bridge).

    Cons

Terrible leadership at VP and above. No innovation. Poor brand practices. Create things because they can not because their customers want them. Antiquated product development thinking; fixated on making physical widgets instead of full solutions and services that integrate HW/SW and the cloud. No handle on who their true customers are. Not enough weight given to research, consumer insights, and performance metrics. No long-term strategic thinking. As most recent quarterly miss and last two years show, inability to read their own business accurately. Worse, people in charge don't realize how bad things are: utter lack of self awareness. Director and below employees often get overruled and are not empowered to make decisions or mistakes.

    Advice to Management

Step down for the good of the employees. Let innovators, brand experts, technologists and true executive leaders take over and remake this company from top to bottom.

    Pros

Helping kids learn is why I took this job vs other toy companies. You work reasonable hours and that helps if you have a family. The people left at Leapfrog are really friendly and it feels like home.

    Cons

I call Leapfrog the Old Boys Club now. It is composed of the CEO and his overpaid TRU posse. Senior management has been making terrible decisions over the past few years with absolutely no repercussions or layoffs. The worker bees take all the blame, get laid off and have no voice. There is a group of employees that have been here from the beginning and will never leave Leapfrog in key departments. This leaves many groups that have employees with absolutely no room for any career growth while the old timers keep getting the repeated promotions and the big raises. The marketing team is a revolving door and they have no voice. The company is now having a talent drain due to a lot of the reasons above.

    Advice to Management

Promote your staff. Listen to your staff. Empower your employees. Take risks in the right areas when the team is behind you and is comfortable with that direction.

    Pros

Learning products are exceptionally well designed. The theories used and meticulous manner used in developing the apps and games cannot be denied.

    Cons

Management doesn't know what it is doing. They do not see the forest for the trees.

    Advice to Management

Get back to the basics of what made the company what it is...solving educational problems for children. Get away from creating expensive hardware (hint: Apple doesn't even make that much margin off their hardware) and start working on getting the educational content. Stop talking and actually do it.

    I worked at LeapFrog full-time

    Pros

passionate people - met some wonderful folks at this company. Objective of making toys and games for kids is great.

    Cons

old white guys who worked in the toys business in 1980 somehow got in charge of the company - and don't know what to do (openly, if you listen to the early 2015 investor call) to fix it. They "follow" companies who used to be competitors, tossed out a ton of creative people and everyone who ever worked at Apple.. .the bottom is falling out. Stay away.

    Advice to Management

Advice to the board - get rid of the CEO and CMO, and bring in someone from Edu/Tech.
