I have been working at Learning Express part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    Welcoming Environment
    Fun place to work
More "human" than big box stores

This was my first job and I was able to move up easily. The people I worked with worked with me and worked like a family. Not much (if any) headbutting

    Cons

It's retail. You'll deal with a variety of customers. The good, the bad, the memorable (in one way or another). Don't let this discourage you though. This is a great company to work for

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

A little more training in special events could be beneficial. Also, maybe more opportunity for advancement would be beneficial and encouraging to employees.

I worked at Learning Express part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Working here began well enough. It was relatively stress free, schedules were set ahead of time and a few of my coworkers were fun to be around. You get a huge packet to fill out and learn lots about toys.
We had a chance to try out many toys and games, and create packaging.

Manager was usually easy to work with when asking for days off, aside from holiday time.

    Cons

We began being ignored last year when asking about a month's bonus pay our store was due. Thankfully, I took it to the NJ DoL and received it. Know your wage laws and don't be afraid to pursue your case if you're in the right!

Besides that, there were no regular reviews or raises.

Montclair has its own brand of crazy customers but treat people professionally; it's probably not you. I would expect to mop up pee at a hospital or petting zoo- not in a toy store. Some parents won't even offer. Like anywhere, most are nice to deal with.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Do not ignore your employees and coworkers, especially when asked about compensation.
Have a bonus and/or raise program in place.

    Awful place to work

I worked at Learning Express part-time

    Pros

    i cant think of any

    Cons

Little to no training. I had to work for three weeks before someone actually trained me. They didnt tell me about the work schedule so I'd show up on the wrong days and theyd laugh at me. The managers gossip about the employees all the time. Inconsistent work schedule. Incredibly rude to new workers

    Pros

    - Friendly managers and co-workers
    - Constant customer interaction
    - Many different job skills learned (operating register, phone skills, communication skills, inventory, merchandising, filing reports... the list goes on)
    - FOOD! Someone always brought in some type of yummy snack to share :)

    Cons

    - Gets boring when the store is slow
    - Minimum wage (unless you move up or have been there for a long time)

    Very disappointing

    I worked at Learning Express

    Pros

    No pros really...
Got to play with toys sometimes

    Cons

Employees all treated and spoken to like idiots all day every day
    No raises ever or advancement
Management and especially the owners were so disrespectful.
I have seen many employees cry because of the way they were treated.
Really quite the depressing work environment considering it was supposed to be a happy fun place

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop acting like snotty rude 15 year olds (no offense to 15 year olds)
Try APPRECIATING your employees for a job well done. A simple "thank you" goes a long way.

I worked at Learning Express part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Working at Learning Express is a great opportunity to learn proper customer service. They encourage creativity and interpersonal skills with custom toy personalization so it's a great place to work if you love drawing or painting. They also teach you gift wrapping: I can proudly wrap a gift in 60 seconds or less. They also encourage you to get to know the merchandise so you can give good suggestions to customers walking in which means playing with a lot of toys. Working here was very fun and stimulating.

    Cons

After you've tried all the demos it can get a little mundane, especially in the summer months. Toy stores tend to experience really heavy season fluctuations. Depending on the location it can get pretty boring during the down season and insanely busy during the winter holiday season. Some customers can be very demanding because the products tend to be overpriced.

    I worked at Learning Express

    Pros

Good atmosphere to be in, the company has a good mission, and it's fun to be around the kids

    Cons

It is hard to advance within the company

Former Employee - Anonymous Employee in Upper Montclair, NJ

I worked at Learning Express part-time

    Pros

    - Gave me a decent background in retail experience to put on a resume.
    - Being able to do activity/fun days and the like was always something to look forward to.
    - I had wonderful coworkers who I still keep in touch with.

    Cons

    - Taking off for any reason was nearly impossible. The manager almost always refused to give up their personal time to help employees who need off for significant reasons. Even if you ask for just one or two days off in a month WAY in advance, you still probably won't get off.
    - The owner cares even less about the employees.
    - It is difficult to advance/receive a raise.
    - Even if you work hard, you will still often feel like your job is on the line.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat your employees with respect. Don't make them feel expendable. And do NOT talk about the employees behind their backs; we all knew that you did it and it did not make us feel valued.
