I worked at Legacy Professionals full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Family environment, less hours than industry standard.

    Cons

After being at 2 other accounting firms after legacy, they are miles behind other firms in terms of compensation. While I was there for 3 years, they continued to hire because they thought they were understaffed when in reality they just didn't make there employees were that many hours (50 during busy season, 40 during non-busy). These other firms expect more hours than legacy does, but also pays a much higher compensation. Most importantly, legacy does not help you in the future if you decide to leave because other firms are in different sectors than legacy, so you either need to leave after 2-3 years or stay the long haul.

    Advice to Management

Have less accountants and raise the expectations (hours) on the accountants that are employed so they can earn more compensation because that was the #1 reason people left while I was there (they just were not making enough money when other firms would pay a lot more). Legacy is a niche firm with clients in the Union and Non-For-Profit sector which yield lower fees than other medium sized firms that perform business and personal tax returns and audits in more profitable sectors (i.e. manufacturing, construction contractors, etc.).

    Pros

Great Training Program and room for personal growth. Supervisors are invested in teaching and nurturing new graduates. Good place to learn!

    Cons

There are too many partners. It takes a long time for change.

I have been working at Legacy Professionals full-time

    Pros

Most of the people are good hearted and they actively attempt to obtain a family atmosphere even though it's a medium-sized firm.

    Cons

The benefits package is deceptive. They do pay the deductible, but because it is an HSA plan, the deductible runs out very quickly. As with most accounting firms, they are slow to change and have a difficult time accepting new methodologies.

    Advice to Management

Management should be more open to outside processes and opinions.

    Pros

Great people who are very approachable

    Cons

Salary is significantly below industry standard

    Advice to Management

An honest review of salaries would enable the firm to retain great people before the move on to somewhere else.

I worked at Legacy Professionals full-time

    Pros

Good people who are smart and work hard. Generous time off, good benefits package overall. Nice location in downtown Chicago. Discounted parking for employees. Good career path for accountants. Pretty good work/life balance since you don't have to work 50+ hours a week. Not expected to work crazy hours.

    Cons

Can be micromanaging. For example, have to report to receptionist if you are leaving the floor to go downstairs to get coffee and when you go to lunch. Lunch breaks closely monitored. Attendance scrutinized. Accounting staff given much more freedom and favoritism than non-accounting staff.

    Advice to Management

In the year 2012, realize that people do not want to be micromanaged and employees are adults. Doesn't reflect well when favoritism is shown more toward accountants/CPAs.

    Pros

Hours are slightly better than other public accounting firms. Management is very friendly.

    Cons

Lower pay in comparison to other public accounting firm. Client's are often in bad neighborhoods.

    Advice to Management

Compensate better or top talent will continue to leave.
