I have been working at Legal Aid Society full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Legal Aid gives young and inexperienced professionals, the ability to secure work in the legal world directly out of school.

    Cons

There really is not much room for advancement. Promotions are very few and far between and people do not stay for very long. Salary is also below average.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I don't have much advice for management. They do what they can with what they are given. I have no complaints with them and hope they keep up the good work.

I worked at Legal Aid Society full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Collegial atmosphere, excellent training, supervisors very helpful. One of the few law firms that is organized, i.e., you have a union. As you develop skill, you get more responsibility -- more challenging cases.

    Cons

Low salary for NYC and public interest law. Must work occasional weekend and night court. Stressful at times. There are several rude and plain stupid judges. Don't take this job unless you can keep personal feelings in check, meaning an appropriate distance from your clients -- most of them are going away and you cannot blame yourself.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Coordinate loan forgiveness with colleges.

I worked at Legal Aid Society

    Pros

Passionate people who care about their work.

    Cons

Very mismanaged. People who have been there forever are given "a pass" as well as a bloated salary, while new competent hires cannot be retained because of poor pay and benefits.

I have been working at Legal Aid Society full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Great benefits, unlimited sick time (for lawyers), casual office environment and family-like staff.

    Cons

Poor supervision, high caseloads, support staff very poorly paid (lawyers paid marginally better). Lack of respect for staff by upper management, nepotism is an issue. Little room for advancement.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay better, real pension plan, and respect staff who sacrifice to give back to their community.

I have been working at Legal Aid Society

    Pros

Given this is a non-profit organization, obviously the mission and work done here can be inspiring. The poorest citizens are given access to quality legal advocacy at no cost. People are saved from debt collectors, evictions, and medical debt. Additionally, the Guardian ad Litem program assists abused, abandoned, and neglected children

    Cons

As the title implies, you may bring a lot of big ideas and high hopes, but you will receive very little support. This company is very backward and old-fashioned in their approaches to fundraising. There is no online presence. It is not seen as a necessity. Very little opportunity for growth unless you go to law school. A lot of nepotism going on.
