Working at Leiden University was a great experience

    Postdoctoral Researcher (Former Employee)
    Leiden (Netherlands)

ProsThe University provided a great collection of coworkers. I was impressed by the excellent support staff who were very helpful in various situations, not only directly related to the office. Compensation was very good for my level. The city itself is very nice to live in, not too big but with all the amenities. The proximity to Schiphol airport is a great help for someone who travels a lot.

ConsAs someone new to the Netherlands, I would have appreciated more clear instructions as to what is needed for local government and administration.

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend

A Phd candidate in data mining´╝îworking on the Infrawatch project. I am good at analyse big data.

    PhD (Current Employee)
    Leiden (Netherlands)

ProsThe environment in Leiden university is friendly and creative, the library is convenient and useful. The staff in Leiden is also helpful.

ConsLeiden university is quite international, English is a wildly used language. We use English everyday with my dutch colleague. For people who want to practice Dutch, will have some small problem

not bad but can be better

    PhD Student (Current Employee)
    Leiden (Netherlands)

Prosold university with a long histry. some areas are really famous.

Consthere is no campus of the university, so it feels more like a institute rather than an university.

    Open, quality university

    Researcher (Current Employee)
    Leiden (Netherlands)

ProsHighest student satisfaction rate in the Netherlands. Rich student life. As a researcher, plenty of interaction opportunities, e.g. in bio-informatics and medicine (Leiden University Medical Center), physics and other exact sciences. Exact science campus surrounded by high-tech companies.

ConsComputer science labs are a bit old, but new campus being built. Relatively little interaction with high-tech companies on same campus. Food and housing can be rather expensive.

I'm glad I chose to do my internship in Leiden instead of going abroad

    Research Intern (Former Employee)
    Leiden (Netherlands)

ProsThe environment at Leiden U is creative, the lab facilities are good and are currently expanding. Most importantly, researchers can have the support they require.

ConsThe only negative thing I have to say is that technical support for the labs is not up to standard. More *specialized* staff is required, as those on call are not always able or willing to fix what is wrong.

ProsThere are good teachers and good education, and a global approach to education, with a lot of international students and teachers.

Consthere are some organisational difficulties. As a student you sometimes don't get the information you need of it isn't clear enough.

    Good work/life balance, competitive salary

    Leiden (Netherlands)

Pros5 weeks' holiday, everyone speaks English, good career opportunities; great location ; good retirement options; 5-year waive rule for taxes is a great option for foreigners

Consdifficult to integrate socially, lest Dutch is known; but people are still acceptive in general of various ethnic backgrounds; high Dutch taxes
