Pros
Co-workers are nice and generally great to work with. Being a global company, there might be many conference calls at night or early morning, but management is generally very understanding and allows for more flexible hours to promote a good work-life balance.
Cons
There was always an uncertainty about job security due to the constant re-orgs and possible paths of career progression were very limited.
Advice to Senior Management
Happy employees are good employees. Find out what really makes employees happy (meaningful work, recognition for achievements, fair salary and band level relative to other co-workers, less bureaucracy, working with truly talented leaders and co-workers, available career paths for roles and responsibilities that an employee is actually passionate about, etc...).
Pros
Pay and ability to make individual change.
Cons
Mid and Division management completely incompetent. No knowledge of tactical positions and external impact to clients.
Advice to Senior Management
Disconnect at the US to China management levels.
Pros
Work Life Balance
Understanding Management
The site has a pretty good cafeteria
People are friendly and easy to work with
Opportunity to work outside of assigned role...learn new things
Cons
It seems that the pay is below market value for the role in which one is employed.
The expectation for the employee reaches far greater that role for which he/she was hired.
Pros
Good work life balance
Global environment with growth in all GEOs
Cons
Very flat organization with little room for professional growth
Pros
Culture, work life balance, cutting edge technology, diverse workforce.
Cons
External technical competition is about to get fierce once the giants realize how good the products are and that market share is growing.
Pros
- Global exposure and experience
- Good pay
Cons
- No work/life balance - yearly layoffs - less people and the amount of work is still the same;
- Carrier advancement not possible - it is about who you know and not what you do
- No recognition for work well done
- Management - scare tactics, micro-management, no coaching/development
- No job security
- Senior management focuses on current quarter/Fiscal Year (big bonus carrot) vs. long term strategy/success of Lenovo
- Internal systems/processes are joke
Advice to Senior Management
People are your biggest asset. You will lose some great talent as soon as the economy turns around if you don't start paying attention on work/life balance, fair treatment and carrier advancement opportunities. Also it is a time to take a look at some long-term IBM execs who are overpaid, provide little value, take credit for work done by their teams and feel entitled (they all protect each other).
Pros
Dynamic challenges abound as the cultures between China and IBM are sorted out. Good product set (ThinkPad), decent compensation, smart colleagues.
Cons
Cultural gaps between China ownership and west. Poor consumer strategy. Lack of brand recognition holds back consumer adoption. PC industry in serious flux.
Advice to Senior Management
Be more aggressive in releasing state of the art consumer products of interest to the market, not the product catalogue.
Pros
Good products and good people
Cons
Let me sum this up in the words of a SVP speaking to an all hands meeting: "Your priorities are to first to your department objectives, next the company objectives, then your religion, and then your family. If your priorities don't align in this way then you need to consider leaving the company." Need I say more....
Advice to Senior Management
no point in commenting here - senior management has only one goal: they are soley interested in making their targets so they can receive a hefty bonus, often at the expense of the people that work for them. There is no long-term incentives for management to manage people well.
Pros
There was no micro management which is a plus
In lieu of compensation management was able to provide extra days off
Cons
Management was so worried about being in a click with other persons below them it was difficult to express what was really going on in the business
Advice to Senior Management
listen to your staff and what is going on in the environment and be honest with future layoffs although they layed off most of the finance / accounting department
Pros
good experience working for an international company; good people; interesting product line; interesting work; nice offices; on site gym with state of the art equipment
Cons
time zone was a killer if you work with China; lots of e-mails to process; lots of meetings to attend; decisions were made by group consensus
Advice to Senior Management
would like to see more job enrichment programs that allow the employees to renew their batteries since so many people are worn out from the long days and constant e-mails
