Pros
Possibility of making great money
Great training program
Turn system during slow periods to promote equality
Cons
Open floor is not friendly to new employees
Long hours
Advice to Senior Management
Faster updating of training modules needed for employees to have current information. Better initial shadowing system in order to properly prepare new sales associates for the rigors of an open floor system.
Pros
-Dental after 3 month probation is up.
-Discounts on store items after 3 months.
-Profit sharing, but don't get your hopes up on this one as it basically amounts to nothing more then a small bonus cheque. It is paid in February however which is nice as that's when you will be going to the food bank to get groceries as no one is coming into the store to buy anything after Christmas.
Cons
- You have to pay for your own Leons uniforms from Moores. There are two uniform types. (Summer look and Winter Look) So get ready to fork out for 10 full uniforms when you start.
- You have to pay for your own Leons business cards. $50 for 1000 which is not bad but still.
- Minimum wage during your two week training period.
- No base salary after your two week training period is over. Straight commission.
- You are expected to sell at least 50% of the customers, they prefer much more but settle for this, warranties on there purchases. If you don't, get ready for a lecture and warning.
- You have to work every weekend. They then give you two random days off a week during the week but you can't plan your life around the days off as they change every week. So you could not take a second job during the week for extra income. (Which you will need if you work here)
- You'd better perform during the first three months or your gone. They make sure that you are aware that you are on a short leash during this time.
- 3% commission off every item sold however you don't get paid until the item is delivered to the customer so it could take a month to get paid for a big deal.
- 11% commission off every warranty sold which is not bad but the warranties are usually for only $15 to $80 so don't expect a windfall.
So to sum it up, this job is only for people who don't have any financial obligations or do not have enough education or experience to get into an office environment. If you have kids that you need to feed and a mortgage that needs to be paid keep looking as you'll lose both during the slow times.
You will need to sell $1,000,000.00 worth of items in order to take home a $30,000 salary. That's an average of 1600 large ticket items per year. That's 6-8 fridges a day. Do the math and then have a nice little laugh at the add you just saw in the paper that reads "Earn $45K to $100K per year!"
Advice to Senior Management
Tell it like it is in the ads and start paying the trusting people that start working for you what they are worth.
Pros
The people. Profit-sharing. Discounts. Benefits.
Cons
Very low payscale. Inconsistent management. Lack of quality merchandise.
Advice to Senior Management
Maintain fairness and professionalism with all associates. Expect professionalism and reward it.
Pros
-flexible schedule. If you are in school, this is a job to have. They work around you
-relaxed enviornment. They wont yell all the time
Cons
-PAY! they do not pay their employees well. Hard to live a comfortable lifestyle based on wages
-Too much responsibility for pay
Advice to Senior Management
Offer competitive wages in order to keep employees longer. Talk to employees like they are adults. Dont cause stress. :)
Pros
if you sells a lot then u get lots of money
Cons
it was very long hours
Advice to Senior Management
manager wont leave
Pros
Fixed prices and no haggling permitted is the only positive aspect of this company. Sales assocites only focus on customers and do not even have to ring in the order. It is done by the customer service counter.
Cons
No ethics on the floor. sales staff are encouraged to scoop eachother to call a deal closed. You learn what a dog-eat -dog-world means. very high turnover. Always running ads for new sales associates needed in every publication. Very pushy and extremely quota based. If you quit, you can never come back to Leon's! The lowest class of all furniture retailers in Canada.
Advice to Senior Management
Learn some business communication skills. Have some Class.
Pros
You have a chance at moving up in the company. You can also switch departments quite easily. There are also a lot of things you can learn if you want to. The position itself is not terrible. I can do as little as I want or I can take on more responsibility if I so choose. I do not have to wait to be promoted.
Cons
The downside is that there is no change in pay if I take on more responsibility. I also have to work every weekend and I have to work holidays. I have to give them a months notice to take a day off. They do not support work/life balance. The pay is not very good. The computer system is outdated. We are still using DOS.
Advice to Senior Management
If they can't afford to pay better, they should at least more flexible with hours. There should also be a change in pay if someone takes on more responsibility.
Pros
Leon's is a very well run company. Inventory is well controlled to prevent losses, salespeople are well trained on salesmanship and on product through live events as well as through websites on the internet, the environment is fun and rewarding, hours are very good (time off is no problem if you have commitments to family or friends). The company continues to grow and be profitable. The most important reason is that the company operates above board; managers and sales staff do not promise what they can't deliver which I think is rare in the world of big ticket retailing today.
Cons
None come to mind...money's good, managers are fair and competent and the hours are great! What more could you ask for??
Advice to Senior Management
continue to push forward.....
