HIstorically significant building and org for grassroot movements, struggles to find its identity in new millenium

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsDevoted meaningful services to the community ranging from HIV/AIDS prevention and support, bereavement, smoking cessation, not to mention their comprehensive youth program.

ConsConstant staff turnover, title changes, renovations. Who they serve is not who they try to cultivate for long term loyalty and support, due to wealth disparity and also client confidentiality.

Advice to Senior ManagementHire staff who want to work for you for good and glory, not just to bring flashy credentials. Pay scale needs to be reconsidered. The entry level and mid level staff have high turnover partially because the salary is difficult to sustain living standard in NYC. I cannot think of deep moving reasons that some folks higher on the ladder have up to triple their staff's pay when they cannot do the work themselves. Pay on skillset, please.

    Just OK.

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsGreat place to express creativity, feel like you're doing work on the ground, etc.

ConsLower end salaries, not the best benefits, lack of experienced HR staff. Very high turnover the last few years (layoffs/termination), low transparency and communication.

Not a very empowering place to work.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) New York, NY

ProsMedical benefits, vacation and dental are offered. Official work hours are good, 10-6pm. Dress is casual.

ConsPoor management. Very catty and gossipy culture. Felt as if the men were given better salaries and promotions than women.

Advice to Senior ManagementManagement needs better training on how to manage diverse groups of employees. They need a real HR dept.

Perfect example of the non-profit industrial complex

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee) New York, NY

ProsGood benefits, feel-good work, pretty good group of people to work with, great location, some fringe benefits, some flexibility with schedule

ConsSalaries are way too low, cost of benefits package has increased significantly, upper management totally takes advantage of rest of staff.

Advice to Senior ManagementIf you pay people more accordingly to the quality of work they are producing, maybe so many people won't leave.

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsPassionate about contribution to LGBT community is exhilirating!
Make a difference by promoting critical public policy initiatives you believe in!\
This work is meaningful and potentially enhances lives of thousands.

ConsPassion may lead to burn out.
    Do not over-commit.
Volunteers are not employees; accountability may be a challenge.\
Emotional investment in this type of work can be draining.

Advice to Senior ManagementAcknowledge volunteers, interns and donors. Don't overload senior management. Board members should contribute 12 hours/month. Be visible and continuously seek synergy, strategic partnerships and agency merger opportunities. Build human capacity, critical mass and economies of scale by implementing a "one-stop" inter-agency LGBT center.
