I have been working at LexisNexis Legal & Professional full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

The people at Lexis are amazing. The company does an amazing job hiring talented, motivated, collaborative people. They say, "Our biggest competitive advantage is our people," and it's true, as many accounts are won/saved as a result of the phenomenal employees.

    Cons

Constant restructuring! The Legal division is losing its top talent as a result of cutting roles over the past 6 years. It is incredibly disconcerting and dramatically affects morale. Employees who remain at Lexis refer to having a "one year contract" before next year's cuts. Numerous offerings, especially Lexis Advance, are TERRIBLE. Future cuts to accommodate the failure of Lexis Advance are inevitable, unfortunately.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Improve Lexis Advance or Lexis Legal will fail.

I worked at LexisNexis Legal & Professional full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Professional, hard working people who are easy to collaborate with and more than willing to help you build internal networks (important when you come to LN via an acquisition). Great sales coaching, training, etc. LN values its sales team and is committed to giving the necessary tools to succeed. Provide an important service to their customers and take community involvement, giving back, etc., seriously.

    Cons

The legal research industry as a whole is changing and LN is no different. That's not necessarily a bad thing though since just as many doors are opened as they are closed.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Thank you for investing so much in my professional sales growth and training.

I worked at LexisNexis Legal & Professional full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Well-defined business units and growth objectives. Co-workers are easy to work with, talented and smart. Business is fairly mature but opportunities to grow still exist and are being actively pursued.

    Cons

Pay is below market, and sometimes it takes longer than expected to get an initiative approved for development and in the queue.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Work more to identify and exploit new market opportunities -- investing in promotion and research where possible.

    Pros

The work is very interesting; the people are good

    Cons

The legal department went through a violent change when ChoicePoint was purchased by LexisNexis, resulting in the CP remaining leadership focused solely on their career. Leadership does not control information to use at their advantage and focuses on the needs of the team, not just their own career.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Get some leaders

    Cons

I need more communication and clarity with speech and emails. Inconsistent leadership. Continuous work, it seems that we are never caught up. Almost no chances to progress in career.

21st century wrapper, 19th century culture: Not a good place to work - not for outsiders or professionals

I have been working at LexisNexis Legal & Professional

    Pros

    - If it is the only job offer you have (take it and keep looking)
    - You are writing a book or case study on poor management practices
    - If you are responding to an "MBA" preferred position - it's not preferred and certainly not required
    - You like a factory "punching a clock" work environment
    - You don't see value in innovation, process improvement, or treating people as professionals
    - You are an HR professional and view employee engagement as just words on a poster, reasons to have a few cookouts and look good in an annual report (LexisNexis is just the place for you)

    Cons

    - Incredibly poor management practices - does not value or promote people. In my department, no one had been promoted in over three years. Some had graduate degrees, were top performers and were kept at the lowest level of the career path for many years although worked as if in the higher position. Why do they stay? Fear: "lucky to have a job".
    - Impossible performance standards. Only measured on what you didn't achieve, rather than your achievements. Therefore, you can never achieve anything other than "meets expectations". Management brags how their standards are "tough".
    - Factory style work environment. Sitting at your desk is highly valued. HR says they are flexible (even has work from home program) but it's for the lucky few. If your manager doesn't agree with being flexible - then these options aren't available to you. Your manager sets the policies, not HR.
    - You can never provide any value because you haven't been there for the last 10-20 years and therefore know "nothing" from the leadership's perspective.
    - If you don't like all this, or you have a rotten or even bully manager (and they are quite common), then the reason is it's "you" that doesn't fit in and doesn't fit the culture. It should tell you everything you need to know about this organization. Yes, bad companies do exist and they hide behind their "culture" of bad practices. LexisNexis is one of those companies -

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - Stop trying to buy talent - your management doesn't value bringing in new talent with industry experience
    - Read the book "How the Mighty Fall" by Jim Collins
    - Replace your HR leadership - they are failing your organization

    Pros

benefits, parking, working with good people

    Cons

HR is not on your side, top heavy management, pay is not good at all and no room for advancement

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Streamline top management and learn what you are trying to teach. Allow your people to work from home to balance work/life which is something you preach but don't do. Company is not customer service focused and are losing customers daily because management can't seem to get it right. Allow your employees to vent and tell you what is going on in the real world.

    Pros

Brand name is strong, we have benefits, we have exceptional employees, policy and procedure structure is very sound.

    Cons

Talent doesn't rise to the top, upper management is poor, all the talent is below VP and Sr Director levels, can't get anything done without many layers of managers involved. We're not innovative but we talk about innovation. We have lost and continue to loose top talent across the organization. Our best employees are leaving to work for our competition. Salary and job titles for ChoicePoint employees negatively impacted by the LexisNexis acquisition. Job titles do matter and paying market rate for experienced employees makes good business sense. Not every job is entry level value, but LexisNexis seems to think so.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

No need to offer advice, the leadership isn't listening.
