Pros
The UA position is a great place to start building an insurance career. I've been in Property Underwriting for several years and I'm still learning new things. Can possibly lead into Underwriter position if that is desired. Liberty offers good benefits and good pay.
Cons
Management in my region needs help. They are hands off and don't communicate with their employees much. There is no sense of team in my office.
Advice to Senior Management
Get to know your employees. Act like you care about them. Deal with personnel issues up front instead of letting them grow to be extreme problems.
Pros
There are good opportunities for professional growth especially if you are willing to put in the work and prove yourself.
Cons
Very corporate environment. Typical Boston business attire and attitudes. People can come off as a little harsh until you prove yourself.
Advice to Senior Management
Focus more on employees and engagement. It's not always easy to see the big picture when working for such a large company.
Pros
Liberty is a good place to work. I would suggest it to anyone that is looking to move up in the insurance world.
Cons
As with all insurance companies, your stuck in a cubicle all day. You have to be up for the "corporate" environment.
Advice to Senior Management
Make sure you recognize your talent and also allow outsiders to come into the company. Good people to hire out there.
Pros
The company can feel like one big family despite how big it is. It is a internationally known company with a good reputation. There are also many opportunities to transfer within.
Cons
Because the fact that it is such a big company sometimes it's easy to be overlooked. It depends on the department of course. The pay, while good, isn't the most competitive. Also the medical insurance is pretty bad.
Advice to Senior Management
Management training should be required to all managers especially on how to grow your own staff. Often times the work is more important than the people.
Pros
It is a very nice work life balance here, but it really depends where you are. Sales seems to be a pretty good gig, but in claims where i was there really was very little opportunity for advancement, altough the starting pay was decent for a recent grad. You will need to put in at least 2-3 years in claims before consideration in other departments.
Cons
Can be boring, stifling, a bit stuffy and old fashioned at times. Be careful because it is easy to get comfortable and slip into mediocrity which is certainly tolerated.
Advice to Senior Management
Overall management seems like good people although i did not have much interaction. They should do more in terms of team building and career development for those who are inerested in advancing.
Pros
Stable organization, fairly good benefits. Pay is simply average. The 401K match is great.
Cons
The glass ceiling remains. Same "old Boston" culture hidden behind alleged compliance with equal opportunity law. Minorities spend 3-5 times longer in substandard positions than white employees, even if they have more experience and are more productive thant their white counterparts. Awards like Bravo, that are directly related to future promotions and raises, are disproportionately given to whites for doing similar jobs with similar satisfaction. An Ivy degree is more important here than real skills, even when those Ivies are clueless and have no idea what it is they are doing. Most managers are clueless, are only looking out for themselves, and in several cases, expect their employees to vegetate in the same position for years, because they went thru the same path.
Advice to Senior Management
be creative, really apply the suggestions from the annual employee survey and not simply do surveys to show outsiders that the company is supposedly being proactive. Allow empoyee to apply the skills they have acquired and make it easier for employees to assume new positions within the company
Pros
Reasonable work hours, senior management encouraging, reward for job well done, training courses readily available for subjects that interest workers
Cons
uptight and structured work environment at Liberty Mutual
Advice to Senior Management
more broad overview with company's directions, and ensure employees understand how their contributions affect the bigger picture. More company outings/meetings
Pros
Good pay for amount of responsibility, friendly environment, good benefits, work life balance, respect for others at the office place
Cons
Not as easy to move upward, even with good and hard work, management doesn't always see the full picture of the employee
Advice to Senior Management
Reward employees who have worked hard all year.. Invite family to picnic/summer outing or Christmas party. Offer commuter discounts to workers who commute.
Pros
Compensation was great. 1.5 days/month paid off for interns was great as well. Cafeteria food was actually decent. 60% of interns get full time offers.
Cons
Too much bureaucracy, things move very slowly. The company does not provide an environment in which employees feel comfortable speaking up about ideas in meetings and day to day situations (even for upper full time employees. Working environment is cold and can be very judgmental.
The environment is a hierarchy. The size of your cube designates your status in the company. I understand that managers should have offices, etc., but at times it almost seemed ridiculous.
Advice to Senior Management
I know that there are some managers who truly care about their emplyees and the feelings of others. But, there are also many who can be very cold and disrespectful to employees. I think that employees are your largest asset and you should do all you can to make them happy.
Pros
Strong benefits
Good pay in proportion to responsibilities
Boston location a plus
Feedback from management and a set promotion path
Cons
Pretty tedious as insurance can be
Professional, but passionless environment
Advice to Senior Management
Reward your best workers
