I have been working at Lids

    Pros

The customers are great, as are my fellow co-workers. My new manager is pretty good. He's encouraging and supportive, unlike previous managers I've had. The discount isn't anything special, but it works. I have a lot of free reign over my store when it comes to visuals and training part-timers. Overall, I enjoy my work.

    Cons

They DM and DMITs are never upfront about promotions. They don't tell you until after the fact. Company has a high turnover rate, which is good and bad. Easy to get promoted, but shows that employees aren't committed to the company, which shows that there are larger issues the higher up you get. There isn't a lot of acknowledgement for employees who do well. Not a lot of coaching either. Upper management always criticizes performance, but never provides the training to improve. Corporate level and store level are worlds apart. It seems like new systems and P&Ps get updated, but they seem to lack common sense and don't make the job easier at store level, just more complicated. Upper management plays favorites, and the longer you're with the company, the easier it is to get away with horrible results. Unfortunately, friendship comes before performance. Only get paid 10 minute breaks, not 15 minutes like the majority of other retail chains.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Ask the store level employees their opinions and thoughts before changing how things are ran. Sometimes ideas make sense in theory, but are not practical in practice.

I have been working at Lids full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Move up quickly, many opportunities, great discount, easy to succeed, if you are pro active with selling you can make a good salary.

    Cons

Tedious, can become boring, holiday hours, poor communication from some upper management, most upper management has come from foot locker and haven't worked in lids in the retail aspect.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay all managers a competitive wage, the lack of pay for them is the reason for turnover.

    Pros

40% discount at all Genesco stores.
Great group of people to work with.
    Great store management.
Get to talk sports and hats with people all day.

    Cons

The regional and district management are the first to call out the part time and full time employees of a store if a store has a bad day or week. Without taking into account mall traffic, or the fact that on some days it's really hard to meet budget (which can be ridiculously high on weekdays sometimes).

They are constantly looking for new leaders, but don't always take the time to cultivate them properly. Lot's of stress if you work at a mid-volume/upper volume store.
