Foster City. Smart people, famous "great" workplace culture not always accurate.

I worked at Life Technologies full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Most people there value your contributions more than the time you spend at the office. The teams are very coordinated and connected; they communicate every step of the way. They trust you to work with high-level staff within a very short period of time. Very interesting and exciting body of knowledge with which to work.

    Cons

Training was by documentation; the documentation was out of date, which we learned by spending time producing the wrong results.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There's a relevant adage: "Most people don't leave their jobs--they leave their managers." Like in most work environments, some of the managers would benefit (and their teams would benefit) if they took management courses.

I worked at Life Technologies full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Lots of challenging work, lots of opportunities for learning, great colleagues across the globe, no micromanagement and fast pace dynamic environment.

    Cons

Work overload, work/family balance is non-existent. Medical benefits quality started trending down, management failed to keep their promises. Certain business units got better perks than other business units showing favoritism.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Policies and incentives should be applied equally across the business units. Re-calibrate the workload and balance to match peoples capabilities. Ensure managers are competent and give them appropriate training to be able to manage others.

I worked at Life Technologies full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Plenty of smart people working on cool projects, global roles abound. Decent compensation too

    Cons

The CEO was telling employees one thing and doing another. No transparency.

I worked at Life Technologies full-time

    Pros

LT deals in cutting-edge biotech systems, so there's always something new to learn, and opportunities to collaborate with people from all over the world.

    Cons

The business is global so it never stops and I would often find myself on conference calls and handling emails outside of anything like business hours. Also, projects supporting stated strategies were not always sufficiently supported for good results.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be credible to employees, and follow through on stated strategies.

I worked at Life Technologies full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Great, smart & competent people. AB had market dominance & great technologies

    Cons

Over the years & since Hunkapiller left, many executive management including acquisitions have led to the loss of AB's cutting edge. Turned too much into a marketing machine where the quality and customer satisfaction became a smoke screen. This was demonstrated by main competitors such as Illumina to consistently beat LT on its own turf.

    Negative Outlook
