I worked at Life Technologies full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Many opportunities to shine. There are also many good managers.

    Cons

Politics (local vs remote). You are hosed if you are not aligned/working with the right Manager. IT is either outsourced (desktop support), or remotely managed (from Carlsbad), new owner (Thermo Fisher) is headquartered in MA.

I worked at Life Technologies full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good salary and bonuses. Lots going on.

    Cons

Very political. Its not always clear who is getting promoted or what the reason is. Although there were some really great people there, some others seemed more concerned with their own careers than the company or their colleagues. There was constant talk about work -life balance, but not a whole lot of it to see. The company was really loosing its charm prior to and after recent acquisition by Thermo Fischer. Seemed like a good time to leave.

    Advice to Management

    Good luck!

  6. The job was good, but the management lacked.

I worked at Life Technologies full-time

    Pros

Don't get me wrong, the people were kind.

    Cons

Maybe this was just my department (software) but I found it very boring and non-collaborative. The cubicle environment was depressing.

    Advice to Management

Work towards a more exciting environment.

    Pros

Lots of opportunity to work on a variety of projects.

    Cons

Very difficult to get promoted, even after you make large impacts.

    Advice to Management

Identify your stars and retain and reward them.

I worked at Life Technologies full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Plenty of smart people working on cool projects, global roles abound. Decent compensation too

    Cons

The CEO was telling employees one thing and doing another. No transparency.

    Advice to Management

Take care of the scientists and engineers- they're the best asset.

I worked at Life Technologies full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

I had a blast with the people I worked with in Pleasanton. The facilities we worked in we're new and very nice.

    Cons

The pay was low and they pay hourly. I guess that's what you get for working in manufacturing. The environment wasn't very challenging and most of the time was boring. There isn't much incentive to stay with the company.

I have been working at Life Technologies full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

People are nice and generally great to work with. Compensation and benefits are fair.

    Cons

Process and bureaucracy often gets in the way. Scientists are made product managers because of domain knowledge or experience but often do not have product management skills. Decisions seem to be made in a vacuum.
