    Pros

The intern program is GREAT. Paid holidays off, independence and freedom in the workplace (no micromanagement AT ALL), free company clothing/gear, great atmosphere, very nice employees who are kind to interns, great perks, intern events (lots of time to bond with other interns, we all became friends), excellent pay. Senior managers are also very kind and open to helping out.

Many interns loved their stay in San Diego, because the work/life balance allows you to also enjoy the amazing summer weather outside of work and socialize with other friends/interns.

I assume things will contract a bit though, due to the Thermo acquisition.

    Cons

The only con I can think of was my manager.

My day-to-day supervisor/mentor was truly amazing (as were 99% of the employees I met there), but my manager was never to-be-seen. I think I just got stuck with a lackluster one, because other interns seemed to love theirs.

    Advice to Management

Give clear instructions and voice your expectations. How will employees know what they need to accomplish, without you expressing it to them?

    Pros

Good place to work and train your yourself. Fast paced some opportunities to move around if you look to apply yourself.

    Cons

Usually if you get promoted they don't offer you significant increases in salary. The company focuses a lot on marketing

    Pros

Nice location; cafeteria in one of the adjacent buildings; telecommuting available for certain positions; peers are friendly

    Cons

Middle management is unmotivated and very political; not driven to improve processes or team dynamics; often taking a 'wait and see if anyone remembers that they requested something' attitude; 'problem' employees are treated like hot potatoes moving from manager to manager after each re-org;health benefits are not good; raises over the past 3 years have been 3 % or less for employees with good reviews; long time employees have learned how to work under the radar to not call attention to their loss of motivation; many employees roam around doing nothing like zombies waiting for their severance packages

    Advice to Management

Director level management should not expect to motivate employees by yelling at them or degrading them; middle level management should not lose sight of what they bring to the table and stop sitting back and waiting for someone to yell at them; clean house Thermo...

    Pros

Management is very helpful and supportive of your growth and development. Plenty of training opportunities and a good work/life balance.

    Cons

Same you will find with a lot of large organizations. There's a lot of pushback between departments trying to disown certain responsibilities or trying to tell another department how to do their jobs. Heavy reliance on temps which means a revolving door of retraining people. Compensation and benefits are not the greatest.

    Advice to Management

Hire more permanent workers and a lot of problems would be solved

    Pros

Experienced and a few Smart, well educated colleagues. Good Salary and benefits. Lots of allocated vacations as compared to other companies in the market.

    Cons

No challenging work, politics, more focus on reporting out project results than GETTING TO DO good quality actual work, showcasing team/self and branding, lack of mentally challenging/intuitive opportunities. The job Did not help self-growth/learning.I have done my masters in engineering- never got to use any optimization/engineering skills

    Advice to Management

Leaders appear political. I think it would help employees if the leaders have relevant experience and stress more on good quality work/perfection/challenging and rigorous deadlines. Things done to showcase/brand the team even if they are not accurate. An employee should look at their leader as someone whom they can follow to lead by example.

  11. A big company with a lot of innovation, but also a lot of bureaucracy.

    Pros

A really big company with a lot of resources and projects going on at one time, meaning if you have a project, you can get it done. For most people, it was easy to move into different roles and try many job roles, and Life Tech's place in biotechnology gives you a central location to the field.

    Cons

I found the work often very repetitive, and the times when I tried to move within the company, I found little success. My greatest dislike was the very large amount of reliance the company seemed to have on paper trails and inventory control, at times to the detriment of the work, from my perspective.

    Advice to Management

Although tools to allow better visibility of the work seem great, they also reduce the ownership that the people doing the work have.
