I have been working at Lifespan Corporation full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Interesting, engaging research is being conducted at Lifespan.

    Cons

Lots of bureaucracy. While benefits are incredible, surprisingly, maternity leave is non-existent.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Administrative employees appear to be unmotivated.

I have been working at Lifespan Corporation full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Lifespan has great health benefits. They provide lots of vacation time, starts at 5 weeks. They offer employee discounts from local business.

    Cons

That are a lot if long time employees who make trying anything new or outside the box difficult. Long hours, with not enough recognition for the extra effort you may put in.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Acknowledge and compensate the people who sacrifice for the benefit of the company.

I worked at Lifespan Corporation part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

I worked at The Miriam Hospital as a per diem medical technologist from 2007-2010. My supervisor and the management above were very pleasant and professional, so very UNLIKE the supervisors in my full-time job at that time....
The department I worked in (blood bank) was well managed. They were flexible with my schedule and in return I felt I was useful and helpful to them. When there was a budget shorfallin the late 2000's, Lifespan's
senior management took pay cuts so no one would be laid off.

    Cons

I had a rather long commute and the pay was rather on the low side, but pay for medical technologists was low throughout that region. New England is an expensive place to live and it would have helped if med tech salaries had been higher.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Doing great in 2010 anyway!

I have been working at Lifespan Corporation full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Opportunities because of new management structure
Potentially well-positioned to address impending healthcare regulatory changes
High quality clinical staff at all levels

    Cons

Inconsistent management regarding how to address under-performing staff
Over-reliant on consultants for many issues
One union frequenlty intransigent about accepting changes that would help the entire organization
Pays lip service to employee development but doesn't support financially
Way behind competitors in terms of addressing physician engagement

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to you in-house experts at least as much, if not more, than you listen to external consultants.

I have been working at Lifespan Corporation full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Lots of corporate perks should you decide to take advantage of all the offerings. Union for nurses still maintains good benefit package.

    Cons

Difficult to switch positions due to seniority since many employees have been there so long. Parking can be difficult.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

New leadership is just rolling out, excited to see new plan.

I have been working at Lifespan Corporation full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The pay is ok? It's lower than other hospitals.
I would say that this organization does offer research, but it's largely piggy-backed on better institutions and the profit margin is always considered for all types of research.

    Cons

There's a great emphasis on money and antagonizing the patient.
    No benefits
    Strict hierarchy
Very legal conscious (to the point that it affects patient care)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop lying to literally everyone who works for you and the community your serve and take responsibility for the trust the public puts in you.

I have been working at Lifespan Corporation

    Pros

    Great people and very professional.

    Cons

Most of the people have worked there for more than 10 years...not much of innovation going on over there.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need to change the culture as fast as possible. Less talk and more actions.

I have been working at Lifespan Corporation

    Pros

Great benefits, good location, large, stable employer.

Lifespan offers some definite benefits to potential employees, but in the corporate structure, watch out for favoritism. The rules and policies are constantly changing to accommodate employees who are on management's good side, often with little regard for everyone else.

    Cons

Company constantly losing money, non-profit status means low salaries.

There is a lot of aggravation for very little payout. Middle management is ruled by senior management, who is often out of touch and therefore cannot provide the best advice or leadership. It is a VERY corporate place to work.
