Office Secretary work - highly recommended, great coworkers

Secretary III-260 (Former Employee) Lincoln, NE

Prossummers off, great time and attendance system to keep track of absences and vacation balances. Surprisingly good contributions to retirement accounts, good benefits, good hours. I would still be working there if I lived in the same town.

ConsThe salary does not match the expectations for responsibilities, but this is a public school system so that is to be expected, really. It is really degrading and antiquated to be using the title of secretary in the 21st century as a catch-all for everything from the registrar to the bookkeeper to the executive assistants for superintendents. Updating would bring the district into a more affirming and current environment. Your boss will never have any voice in your compensation, either, so it is a little frustrating to work hard and dedicate yourself to a "company" that cannot reward you in any other way than a paper certificate and a handshake once in awhile.

Advice to Senior ManagementDistrict administrators should make a better attempt to understand the daily activities on the school level. It is not unusual to be given advice that is a little hard to apply at the school level.

    Long term career

    Teacher (Current Employee) Lincoln, NE

ProsLPS is a student focused district that has a long tradition of meeting the learning needs and more of those students. This is often done in very collaborative and innovative ways. People are often encouraged to use their strengths when it comes to students. There are many gifted and dedicated teachers within the district as well as administrators who really care about what happens with students.

ConsEducation in general is a fast paced, changing environment and all individuals involved in the process must learn to adapt or become stressed when their parameters are stretched. This is not a job for people who like things the same way day after day.

    Neutral

Para Educator (Current Employee) Lincoln, NE

ProsGood schedule if you need flexibility due to children's school days. Nice to not go to work if school is cancelled due to snow.

ConsNot much room for advancement. They do not seem to promote from within. Salary schedule discouraging - for several years you will work at the same wage the new employees start at. After 6 years you will get "longevity" pay per hour of about a quarter....

Advice to Senior ManagementPost jobs for internal transfer candidates for a week before opening up to the public.
