I have been working at Linear Technology full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Among the highest compensation in the business, possibly the best profit sharing anywhere. As in average of 30 to 40%. Work with some of the brightest engineering talent in the world. Design Engineers get to take their product from initial design through production release. Are also held accountable every step of the way, so you need to do more than "design."

    Cons

Very high pressure / stress atmosphere. Very little positive feedback. Little comeradery, not much in the way of team atmosphere. Work-Life balance nonexistent. Lateral transfers strongly discouraged. Unless you are a workaholic, I advise getting in, making some money and learning what you can, then get out before you take too much damage. I would advise 5 years max, take your sabbatical and use some of the time soul-searching and checking out the job market.

    Advice to Management

Management does not "take advice." If they did I would say find some ways to incorporate even a little bit of team building and work-life balance. It could just pay off financially. Update internal procedures / processes to the 21st century. The company has become too large to continue doing things "because we have always done it this way and it works"

I have been working at Linear Technology full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Low turnover, nice profit sharing payouts (2x/ year, over 25% the last couple of years), 1.5 month paid sabbatical after 5 years, above average medical/ dental plan design with low monthly contributions, 4% raises each year (most companies in the market are between 2.5-3%), No BS culture straight forward/ direct, performance focused, most managers are honest/ fair and will vouch for their employees/ department, good people, stable company

    Cons

Employees tend to want to retire here which is a good thing but also makes it difficult to move up the ladder. Old school mind-set "if it doesn't break it doesn't need to be changed", no frills (no free food, gym, etc) but it's not that important, you need to speak up if you want something (management doesn't give it to you, you have to ask for it)

    Advice to Management

Be open to newer ways of operating (less paperwork more online)

I have been working at Linear Technology full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Excellent benefits/compensation package. Close to home in a suburban environment (light commuting traffic). Comparable base salary to other like companies but the semi-annual profit sharing on base and OT(average 29% over last 9 years), attendance bonus, ERT bonus, 100% sellback of unused sick time, floating holiday and vacation time as well as the 1-month sabbatical every 5 years makes it a superior employer.

    Cons

The company's attempt to run with a very lean crew makes for good profits but also makes it difficult to utilize earned time off. The generous compensation package makes it difficult to want to leave when you get burnt out (not sure if that's a bad thing). Because of the low attrition rate it is difficult to change shifts when life circumstances require a change. The company is also prone to witch hunts and knee jerk reactions when issues arise rather than spending time and money up front to prevent the foreseeable occurrences before they happen. Has become less in touch with employee needs over the last 5+ years in favor of profits and what I term "management success trophies" (eye candy projects)

    Advice to Management

Reinvest in your employee base. A happy, loyal, focused employee is worth 2 bots that just do as they are told. The best leaders will have employees that desire to see the company succeed vs. just coming to work and doing what they are told because it keeps the paycheck coming.

    Pros

You get to work with highly talented individuals and get to work at the cutting edge of advanced silicon technology. Flexible Hours which i think are manager dependant. Great profit sharing.

    Cons

Can sometimes seem elitist and there are no recreational perks. The cafeteria food recycles every month and you get used to it pretty fast.

    Advice to Management

Consider making the place more fun to work for younger people through team building sessions and some additional perk such as a gym.

    Pros

Good compensation good communication within engineering team got exposure to a large range of things engineering atmosphere is good if staying in the right team

    Cons

Not much professional training Not many chances for promotion Sometimes, the large work load can prevent you from learning new things.

    Advice to Management

In fact, I think the management did what they were supposed to do. Maybe, as employee, people may think the management shall do more things for them. But the management did their work for the company and for big shareholder. So no big complain.

    Cons

    Raises are not that good

    Advice to Management

Upper management doesn't seem to care much with most of their employees.

    Pros

Good place to learn. Some of the top people in the industry work at Linear. People are treated fairly, and the upper management does things that make sense. In 2008 we had a minor layoff, a 10% pay cut and furlough days, which was much better than the big layoffs (about 25-33%) our competitors had. Excellent profit sharing and very good benefits. Ever 5 years employees get a sabbatical, which is fantastic! Several design centers across USA, and a few internationals ones.

    Cons

You will work much harder than most other places. Transferring between product lines is discouraged, but not impossible. Equipment budgets are tight.

    Advice to Management

    Keep up the good work.

    Pros

Very intelligent driven coworkers Free flowing circuit idea sharing Sabbaticals Work life balance Very little red tape & bureaucracy compared to similar companies

    Cons

very few opportunities for advancement (which does NOT mean your compensation stays stagnant too) management swears a lot need to develop superior products with inferior equipment and technology

    Advice to Management

swear less and update technology in lab. there's quite a bit of design inefficiency from not having the right equipment.

    Pros

The bennies....401k, vision, dental, medical, profit sharing.

    Cons

    Unintelligent people. Lack of authority.

    Advice to Management

You need to get the people that do not know what they are doing out of there and get some people who know what they are doing and can perform.
