Pioneering ocean drone company transitioning to accepted and growing commercial product

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) Sunnyvale, CA

ProsIf you are interested in the commercial autonomous vehicle space it is hard to find a company with more early traction, interesting problems to solve, or software and hardware engineering talent. Bonus: If you love the intrigue of exploring the unexplored ocean, this is REALLY your place to work. If you think that making indestructible robots are fun or building the software that pilots oceans is an interesting challenge, get here now.

ConsLiquid Robotics is solving a surprising hard set (read: interesting) of engineering challenges and these ups and downs of building a company exploring "uncharted waters" (pun) can be thrilling one day and a nail biter the next. If your goal is for a predictable, balanced and stable career path, this is not only not your company, but likely not the industry you would enjoy. This is pioneering stuff.

Also, over the last several months there has been a transition from the original company CEO to a new CEO with a different profile and background. It may be a quarter or two before all the changes work themselves out, but the change has been greatly welcomed as Liquid Robotics starts facing different growth issues than two years ago.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep driving the "new focus" on market development, and keep narrow down the engineering project focus. The transparency and the changes that are underway are appreciated. See them through!

    Poor leadership, Significant potential.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) Sunnyvale, CA

ProsPay is on par with industry standards. Free food at office. Flexible work schedule. Work life balance is good. Those veteran employees who are still around are quite competent. Actual products are on par with industry competition. Potential for significant product improvement but so far this is mostly unrealized.

ConsSignificant turnover across company at every level including recent loss of CEO. Average new employment is less than 1 year. Senior leadership does not care about employees well being, training, nor career advancement. There is a pervasive lack of understanding of the industry they are in as well as a severe disparity in the things they say they can do vs what they are actually doing. Backstabbing/politicking is the way of life. Ethics are non existent even in business practices. All hiring is external so internal advancement does not occur.

Advice to Senior ManagementTrain your employees. Communicate more to your direct reports and encourage transparency throughout the organization. Minimize the things you say you are doing to clients to avoid continually retracting statements. Develop ethics best practices.

    Poor leadership

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsGreat product that could be used for such amazing things. The founders are passionate about the product.

ConsManagement is all over the map (by no fault of their own) due to the convoluted direction from exec staff. Different sets of rules depending on your department and manager. Weak leadership.

Advice to Senior ManagementConcentrate on the now and make sure you remember what you state. It is uncomfortable when sitting in a meeting and you know what is being said to the masses isn't what was stated.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend

My experience at Liquid Robotics was short lived for many reasons.

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsStarted to actually acquire a "some-what" start up vibe, but still lacked. However, I appreciated their efforts.

ConsFor a company of about 100 people in HQ, there was not a lot of team commodity! The companies pro is also their weakness. Definitely a male driven company with not a lot of ethnicity. Also, many lower level people were promised promotions, increase salary, or full time, yet it didn't happen or took triple the time they stated. However, mid-management and higher seemed to have no problem patting themselves on the back and reaping the benefits. What could be a pretty neat company was very disappointing and many people have left!

Advice to Senior ManagementRead the Cons, and please make it better!

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend
