    Stressful but positive environment

    Product Developer (Former Employee)
    Toronto, ON (Canada)

ProsEveryone keeps their cool. Mistakes get made but no one points fingers or blames. It's about addressing the issue and course correction. Good group of people and a generally relaxed atmosphere.

ConsLarge work load. Learning curve was steep. Some work travel during Canadian holidays was not always compensated for.

Loblaws has been a positive experience.

    Clerk (Current Employee)
    Brampton, MI

ProsThere are oportunites. I've seen people move up.

ConsYou need to be a serious butt kisser to move up.

Advice to Senior ManagementStop being so cheap.

good company to work for, but need to build your connections to advance

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

Proscompany pay 2000 tuition each year to help you grow, gym in the 1pcc building keeping work life balance. Company is on SAP which allows you to have understanding of the system.

Consa lot of unhelpful and lazy people who uses their connections to stay in the company. Company should pay attention to more talented and hardworking employees and grow them. Or else talents will leave to target, sobeys, walmart etc.

Advice to Senior ManagementNeed to understand the system and know your people more.

    Going through change

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsGym, cafeteria, vendor promotional give aways.

ConsDisorganized, management and workers seem to be on different page. Trying to implement processes on unstable systems. No cohesiveness with different teams and management.

    Must tolerate stress and politics

    IT Team Lead (Former Employee)
    Brampton, ON (Canada)

ProsThe office in Brampton is a good facility: food court with reasonably priced food, Goodlife fitness, volleyball court, enough parking (if you do not come after 9:00 am). The pay is slightly above the market (premium for taking the risk of being laid off in the next re-org)

ConsThe burocracy is huge. There are layers and layers of middle (senior managers, directors) management. Every now and then the company hires a consulting company to "fix" this. The typical outcome is: 1)lay-offs, 2)outsourcing 3)new-hiring due to bad service level of the outsourced services 4)hire new management consulting company and repeat the cycle

Advice to Senior ManagementLook at the turn-over rate in the store support center.

    Front end service clerk

Front End Service Clerk (Former Employee)
    Ottawa, ON (Canada)

ProsBenefits USED to be great, weekly pay, guaranteed raises and friendly co-workers

ConsRaises are laughable, benefits got cut as well as hours at one point and the union has been made redundant. Also management can't give out raises, it's all done by the number of hours you work so it doesn't reward good work, just working often.

Advice to Senior ManagementActually bring in your front end service clerks when there's positions open even if they don't show interest. The majority of the time I was there I had no clue other departments were looking for workers because I was out of the loops due to having to be outside the majority of the time.

Good place to start your career

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

    ProsGreat people
Get to use lots of different systems
    A lot of cross-functional interaction
Ability to gain good understanding of retail and CPG operations
    Meetings with vendors
Great office with good cafeteria and gym

    ConsLimited opportunities for advancement
Feel like a number because of so many levels of management
    Bureaucracy
Considerable time spent on SAP implementation related projects which adds to the workload
Comparable to the industry but low pay, insignificant pay increases

Advice to Senior ManagementPut some effort into retaining talent. The current company turnover is too high and it undermines employee morale. Provide opportunities for team members to assume responsibility and grow. Encourage employee rotation within the organization as opposed to stopping them.

    mediocre work place

    Cashier (Current Employee)
    Richmond, BC (Canada)

Pros-good training, supportive and friendly supervisors
    -flexible work hours for students
-you get to meet a lot of new people
-you get off work on time
-you get a 10% discount card after working 6 months, and you get health benefits after working 300 hours and is off union probation

Cons-be prepared to work for intimidating/unfriendly/unreasonable managers (depends where you work though)
-be prepared for rude customers but thats a given
-you don't get a lot of work hours unless you change your availability to "anytime"
-have to pay a lot of union fees
-you don't move up simply by working hard
-price checkers are rude and impatient
-have to request for vacation 6 months in advance or you don't get it
-random note but superstore is definitely not a eco friendly company; they charge customers for bags but managers don't allow employees to use reusable water bottles at work - we can only drink water from plastic bottles which defeats the whole purpose of our plastic bag recycle program

Advice to Senior ManagementGive everyone a equal chance
Hire managers that are easier to approach and talk to ; not bullies

Wants so badly for their employees to love them BUT.....

    Contract Manager (Former Employee)
    Brampton, ON (Canada)

ProsGood paying salaries and good benefits

ConsWhen they have used you for your expertise they have no problem getting rid of you. Nothing at Loblaw is really long term any more. They cut "every" October so be prepared. It's a very stressful time for ALL employees. If there are to be cuts they are not very good in seeing if you are adaptable to go some where else and transition successfully. Pay scales are not equitable through out the company i.e. same pay for same work.

Advice to Senior ManagementListen to your employees below your VP levels. They really do know what the're talking about. Let them love Loblaw without the stress of worrying about job cuts. How do you expect loyalty?

Prosgreat benefits, love that they really care about the people and the environment that gets affected by big corporations

Consfairly new employee, have not encountered any negatives yet.
