I worked at Local Corporation full-time

    Pros

Local had a unique and very positive company culture: smart, talented, friendly people great work-life balance it supported it employees who were going through difficult times These things were reflected in the unique phenomenon of frequent re-hires, it was a common event for people to leave the company for other opportunities, but return later. For awhile it had hit upon a very profitable business model. For the last couple of years it was pursuing exciting new business lines and technologies.

    Cons

Ad arbitrage, its cash cow for years, was its downfall. As often happens, it let its one big success dominate the company for too long, leading to failure. This was always a vulnerable business model, and when things finally turned against it in a big way, it was caught unprepared. It did attempt diversification while flush with cash, but the decisions made by the C-suite were stunningly bad. The company tried to grow by acquisitions, rather than relying on their superior technical staff to develop and diversify its offerings. And all of the acquisitions were stunningly bad decisions, done without due diligence (e.g. the technology of an acquisition was never evaluated), and then mismanaged: wasting money, resources and more importantly time. The company was always plagued with top-heavy management, too many layers of executives, and particularly harmful for an adtech company - only in the last two years did it get a technology executive who was competent. All of the previous VPs, Senior VPS, and Executive Directors of technology were incompetent and demoralizing for the engineering team (but as public SEC filings show, made huge salaries) and accomplished nothing (or made things worse). The engineering team was systematically neglected for most of the company's existence - talents wasted and not rewarded. It is remarkable that the company was able to keep so many excellent engineers so long. But now its most talented people have left, at every level and function. It is going bankrupt, and it is too late to turn around. My overall rating has to reflect this fact.

    Advice to Management

The new management is not the old management, but it is too late to offer any advice but to sell it off and shut off the lights.

    Pros

Great group of motivated employees. For a while the company made an effort to provide free lunches three times a week.

    Cons

Bad decisions from Upper Management drove the company to bankruptcy.

    Advice to Management

Be wiser assessing new acquisitions and profitable products.

I worked at Local Corporation full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

-Good if you want a quick stop before finding your real career -Friendly folks and somewhat collaborative group, in some areas -Faced with obstacles in the past but was able to overcome through a group of talented people

    Cons

-Dysfunctional and unable to create a sustainable business model -CEO has no operational success to show or understanding of what it takes to turn a company around. Completely out to lunch, working on other projects -Bad management at all levels. Much of the real talent left some time ago, or is out the door soon.

    Advice to Management

Sell it off quickly. Get out of the company. Never attempt to run a business again.

    Pros

-benefits, bagels, holiday party -made an attempt at fixing things -decent sales process

    Cons

-poor sr. management, lacking real leaderships. makes decisions based on emotion and tends to jump to conclusions -no real product, relies heavily on search engine traffic. -most of middle mgmt just kisses up to leadership, its digusting. have some dignity. -hostile work env, never know when the "big" chief is about to yell at someone. -horrible commission plan; they are always changing it on us.

    Advice to Management

overall, local attempts to be a big fish in a big pound, but its really a small fish in a small pound. company really needs to revamp their sr. mgmt and if they don't they will continue to decline and fall behind. get rid of the "fat" up top and hire real leaders, if not you start losing your good employees. you already lost all sales leaders, head of tech and head of hr, what's next? i hope you guys keep this honest and keep this review here.

    Pros

Flexible schedule Decent Pay Some real good people do work there...

    Cons

Upper Management only hires friends and attractive women regardless of skill level. If you are not an attractive female or are best buds with the C-levels then don't expect to get ANY recognition for ANYTHING you do. Hot chicks and good ole' buddies get awards and promotions. Actual skilled workers who go ABOVE and BEYOND their daily grind do not get promoted or awarded. And the C-Levels constantly breath down everyone's neck and micromanage the hell out of every project.

    Advice to Management

Sell your company to a larger one and bail out, you will not make any money continuing like this.

I worked at Local Corporation as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

nice place and nice location. free breakfast in Friday.

    Cons

Management level has no technique background and no respect to technical people's judgement. Very bossy for the technical decision. No formal QA for the product. Hire some people with no proper background (like hired some C# background people in java group) ans no coding contribution. After one month, promoted the new hired guys to team leader to make decision for the product. Management only want to show some results to client to make client happen, don't care if the data is correct or not.

    Advice to Management

Show respect to technique people if you don't know the technique. Be more responsible for your client. Put more concentration for the quality of the product.

I have been working at Local Corporation full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    - Great people. - Clean, airy, modern building. - Beautifully landscaped grounds - lunchtimes are a pleasure in their 'people spaces.' - Two large kitchens onsite, free coffee and tea, candy & soda machines are only 25c. Free freshly-delivered bagels on Fridays. Occasional catered meetings. Team lunches out. - Regular visits from lunch trucks. - $8 onsite hand-car-wash (inside and out!), dry cleaning take-out. - 15 days 'personal time' (combined holiday & sick time) that can be used as you wish - no more calling in sick when you have just partied a little bit too hard the previous night! - Lavish offsite company events such as catered Xmas party, Sea World, beach parties etc

    Cons

    - Buyer beware: this company 'throws out the baby with the bathwater.' Local.com seems to have a habit of spending millions on buying promising startup companies (Krillion, Spreebird, Octane) then completely mismanages them, overspends all on the wrong things, decides that these companies are not as profitable as expected, then lays off everyone in a panic to save money, including the original teams that started the companies. - Layoffs are made without ANY consideration for the clients who are spending their hard-earned money on Local.com's services. Management has NO CLUE WHATSOEVER what the people they are laying off actually do. Large swathes of the Local.com site are frozen, broken, or stuck on the Xmas Day page from 2009. Management neither notice nor care. It's embarrassing at best, and heartbreaking for the teams who have put years of their lives into Local's projects. - After layoffs, employees left over are expected to handle all the cut people's accounts and projects. Company usually refuses all paid overtime requests; employees are just expected to dig in and "do what they can." I know employees who would frantically work unpaid all weekend just to catch up on the massive amounts of work they are expected to have done in office hours but cannot due to exhaustion and burn out. - Company will string you along and tell you that your department/ team is about to expand and hire more people 'any day now' for YEARS. All the while telling you 'next quarter, next quarter' when you ask for a pay raise, or when you ask for them to hire more people to help with the massive workload. Managers will not push for you as they are scared for their own jobs. - Company gives empty promotions that do not (and never will) include a pay raise. - Company bases your yearly bonus on you achieving a series of 'busywork' and farcical goals that take time away from you doing your actual job. Bonus is not given at Xmas time - when employees really need it - but in February. - Contractors are not allowed to join in company events and celebrations, despite the fact that there is a large core of contractors who have been there longer than most employees. This creates the uncomfortable situation where a contractor who has worked full time onsite for 4 years has to watch new employees who have been there a week go to the Xmas dinner, while they and their family are excluded. This makes for some very uncomfortable social situations in the workplace. - Layoff procedure is HORRIBLE. You are given NO advance notice. You will be allowed to come in and start your normal day's work, then you'll be summoned up to HR halfway through the day & told you're being laid off. While you are up in HR, an assistant will go and pack your desk into boxes (including your personal items like your purse, wallet and cellphone), go through your drawers and attempt to sort your things from the company's things, & dump everything into boxes. They then strip you of your security badge, hand you your boxes and escort you off the promises. Your computer password & company email account are frozen on the spot and you are not allowed to go back onto your computer, save any personal documents or even save your day's work. If you have been working there for years this is a massive shock. This procedure makes you feel like a criminal.

    Advice to Management

    1) Develop your products before launching them!! Get one product 100% ready and then launch it, don't go live with 100 half-baked ideas and force your staff to work extra hard for years at a stretch to cope with broken and buggy software. 2) INVEST IN PEOPLE, NOT PRODUCTS. Your staff are your family, your lifeblood, your greatest fans. We are Local.com. Treat us like reasonable people who give a darn about your company and who will work with you in the fact of adversity. Don't treat us like jumpy children who cannot be trusted to know the truth. 3) Include Contractors in company events and company "All Hands" emails. Treating your workers - Contractors or not - who have been there years like outsiders creates a "them and us" culture that further divides your company from the inside out. 4) Revise your layoff policy. Please. It is truly horrible.

    Cons

toxic work environment their core advertising does not work for the customers you are trained to lie to customers and prospects everyday you are constantly micro managed on your sales style even though the problem is the product does not work they will fire you in an instant no matter what your work history has been

    Pros

Good benefits such as: - Vacation time - Floating holidays - Yearly picnic and Christmas party ( Sear World/ Newport Beach) - Good base salary

    Cons

    - Micromanagement - After the building move the work atmosphere went from cool to hideous. - There is no such a thing as promoting within the company. - You can have great reviews but that will be it for your “future” just great reviews. - Layoffs are just part of the daily life at local. - Zero consideration for people’s personal lives. - If you like to work day and nights for years with no incentives, recognition or promotions this is probably the place for you. - None of the Pros are worth considering to work in this place.

    Advice to Management

Get down to Earth...be realistic at your goals and stop treating people like 2nd or 3rd class citizens.

    Pros

free bagels for all on Fridays

    Cons

the sales floor is a boiler room, revolving door. New hire classes start pretty much on a weekly basis to replace the reps let go the prior week. Been in sales for 20+ years and have never seen a turn around like this.

    Advice to Management

Keep your good talent. Require more than a pulse for new hires. Work on customer service to fix problems with product.
