    Pros

Great company to start working for. Plenty of resources available for learning, advancing, and leading.

    Cons

It is a big company - there is quite a bit of dumb training and administrative junk that you have to dig through.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I have been working at Lockheed Martin full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

I love the 9x80 work week, I also have the ability to come in whenever Id like which is really nice. I have a lot of opportunities to travel, which is possible because of Lockheed's large budget and extensive list of business partners. The company really tries to take care of its customers with good health benefits/incentives, discount programs, credit unions, the list goes on. LM is very active in the surrounding communities with volunteering and reaching out to youth.

    Cons

The yearly LM commit performance reviews are somewhat annoying but it seems like most large companies are doing something similar. With my job, I sometimes have to be on call for emergencies or at times am scheduled to work critical events in the middle of the night.

There are worse places to work than Lockheed Martin, but...

    I worked at Lockheed Martin

    Pros

Best thing is the money and benefits package. You can get more money at other companies, but matching the overall benefits is tough. At times the work can be interesting, sometimes extremely so. There are some very smart people who work at this company or they couldn't build the things they build, do the things they do.

    Cons

There are also a lot of C students working here - lots of those. Bureaucracy mindset freezes most middle managers into fear of making mistakes, which attitude is picked up by staff. A lot of arrogance. Poor cooperation between senior staff members (because there are no benefits to helping others succeed) but this is not limited to LM. Company and corporation consistently awash in cash but staff told repeatedly, no money for raises, training, travel, professional activities even while executives pile up the MICP. HR system appears determined to drive workforce to mediocrity by forcing managers to rate most staff members as "average" regardless of their accomplishments. Very difficult to get an "in-place" promotion, much easier to leave for another department - which sort of makes a career path difficult as well. The higher you go, the more they will work you - 60, 70, 80 hours a week for weeks on end (past a certain level they don't have to pay overtime). Much arrogance in the executive ranks. Cube farms the rule at all major sites. Obtaining necessary job-related software always difficult if not already part of Microsoft Office. Lots of boring, unproductive, poorly run meetings.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I quit giving advice to management years ago because it was pretty clear they didn't listen, especially at the VP level. Their main concern is pumping up their MICP and looking good to their bosses. The good managers are as frustrated by the system as their staff.

I have been working at Lockheed Martin as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

They care about their workers. Yes they demand high quality and quantity of work, but you have an excellent vacation package as well as other benefits. Managers also try to work with you regularly on professional development so you reach your goals.

    Cons

The hours are long and your customers can be very demanding. Not all of your coworkers enjoy their jobs and will sometimes take it out on you if it seems like you're in their way.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire more staff to keep up with workload.

I have been working at Lockheed Martin full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Work with a lot of great people. Have flexible schedules and some ability to work remote although they are currently ending all that. Ability to learn a lot if you take advantage of the classes offered online and many of the other training tools.

    Cons

Reorgs are constantly going on- just about every year for the 6 years I have been there so far- must be very adaptable to change and new bosses. Every year they are taking away more and more of the benefits and employee activities- not really much left. Very very difficult to get promoted there even if you get excellent reviews every year you still won't get promoted for years - it's a slow process and the managers try to avoid promoting at all costs.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Trust your people to do their jobs and promote those who work hard and do a good job- people will respond better when they are shown some appreciation rather than nothing at all

    Pros

Good benefits, good vacation, lots of internal opportunities.

    Cons

slow upword mobility, uptight culture, long commute.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

the company is not geared towards retaining younger talent. So this is a common concern that is regularly voiced by management nothing is done about it.

I have been working at Lockheed Martin full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Great experience and opportunities to learn and grow. You get to solve tough problems that help protect our great nation. You have the opportunity to learn and excel in disciplines including engineering, leadership and project management. If you are driven then you will have an opportunity to excel.

    Cons

Since our primary customers are in defense our opportunities are tied to defense budgets. As defense related budgets contract so will opportunities. Every industry has ups and downs so the question is how long will this downturn last.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Remember to support employees that are willing to take on challenges and opportunities outside of their comfort zones. There are people who do their best to fly under the radar and would not go an extra inch much less an extra mile. If someone is willing to get into the game and engage but stumbles or falls support them and they will go through a brick wall for you.

Lots of great opportunities if you work hard and put yourself out there. High expectations which helps ensure people are pulling their weight and doing a good job.

    Cons

The outlook can be tough because there isn't a lot of new work at some locations.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue to have high expectations but remember folks need some work life balance.
