Employment at LM was ultimately dissatisfying.

Former

Pros – Military systems that were subject of assigned programs were very interesting.

Cons – Insufficient focus on delivering value to federal agencies and taxpayers, LM focus was typically to deliver minimum necessary to be clear of govt sanctions.

Advice to Senior Management – Give taxpayers real value.

Good learning Experience, but they treat you like dirt

Former

Pros – I learned a lot there. there were great people to work with, but they don't know how to treat engineers (Moorestown, NJ). I wish the engineers there the best.

Cons – Join us, and become member of the Borg. Government spending going in right direction. They pay less than average for 'job stability', but the jobs aren't stable anymore.

Advice to Senior Management – Treating your employees like they don't have lives outside of the company is a strategy that will blow up in your face. All your top employees will leave you (like me)

Terriable place to work in

Former

Pros – Flex hours, benefits, people are good to work with

Cons – Not enough training, go to management with problems nothing is done. HR could care less...

Advice to Senior Management – Management is scared to make any moves, employees having problems go to the manager and nothing is done. Management just puts everything under the rug. Try standing up for your people, rather than stabbing them in the back.

Challenging engineering work in a big-business setting.

Former

Pros – Excellent work, dedicated and bright colleagues. Good benefits. The opportunity to do something that will help the soldiers of the american military in their day-to-day tasks.

Cons – Lockheed Martin is a publicly traded company and, as such, will do whatever it deems necessary to maximize the value of its stocks.

Advice to Senior Management – Put your best managers in charge of the youngest employees to aid in retention.

A decent place to work

Former

Pros – Applies to Moorestown site. Great engineers-both personally and professionally, decent pay although slightly below average (which is common in defense industry), good benefits, flexible work scheduling, most engineers guaranteed raises every year through ASPEP Association (like a union with no forced dues). Has doctor/medical staff on site.

Cons – Applies to Moorestown site. Management slow to innovate on some projects. Only allowed to choose company health "insurance", which is not good for families. Too many layers of management, which makes growth opportunities difficult. Layoffs do not properly affect "soft spots", teams are hit rather than individually selecting low-performing engineers from all departments. Performance rating is determined by forcing all engineers into a bell-curve ranking, with a fixed amount of above average ratings allowed-this allows politics to affect the rating system. Some non-engineers can receive an average rating (3 out or 5), yet get no raise. Association is very weak when dealing with company management for periodic contract renewal. Some managers are much less flexible with work schedules than others, even compared with other managers in the same department..

Advice to Senior Management – See Cons. Don't make the rating dependent on the ranking-if a manager thinks an employee deserves an above average rating, that employee shouldn't be forced into an average rating to satisfy the bell curve. Allow for more innovation, and more introduction of new technologies to old products. Allow for more employee movement amongst the various products/projects so that more employees can learn the new technologies.

Problem with this review?

Old school mentality throughout all of management with lower than average pay and very high expectations

Current

Pros – Makes products that secures national security. Average work/life balance. Working towards better flexibility. 3 weeks of vacation

Cons – Old school mentality throughout all of management. Too structured-- everything is "policy". Limited promotions, give you every excuse in the book as to why they cant give you a promotion (but report record sales every year). Limited growth opportunities, especially if you have advanced degrees.

Advice to Senior Management – Take a look at your company and figure out why you only have 40+ that make up 90% of your workforce. Most young people come and leave because you limit our growth and you have nothing to offer us.
