    Pros

It is fulfilling to contribute to the defense of the United States. You may have access to technologies and projects that just don't exist in the private sector. Usually there is a good emphasis on work life balance. It is a huge company that has a lot of interesting projects. Lockheed makes missiles, satellites, ships, and the best military jets in the world. The benefits are above average. In general the people you work with are very patriotic and nice. There is a sense of pride in working for Lockheed Martin and you generally won't be ashamed you work for them.

    Cons

You will see firsthand how much waste, inefficiency, and fanboy jingoism exists in the defense industry In the non-defense sector Lockheed would be eaten for lunch. Too bloated, too full of itself.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop feeling that you are superior because you work for Lockheed. In the non-defense sector Lockheed would be eaten for lunch. Too bloated, too full of itself.

    Pros

Lockheed is a large company. You meet a lot of interesting people, the work always varies, and it's hard to get bored.

    Cons

As a subcontractor, it is hard to get hired full time, despite the fact you are told management would like to hire you. Lots of overtime sometimes, and you also get let go if there isn't enough work to do. They will bring you back if they like you, however. Also if you are a subcontractor, you don't receive any of the benefits, and sometimes people treat you differently. There are also a lot of politics in the office and different departments.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat your subcontractors like real employees, and be honest with them about the working situation.

    Pros

Large company with many options. Company has respect in the workforce. Decent, though not outstanding, benefit package. They have many good people working there that will support you even if there is a lack of support from senior mngt. Good education benefits.

    Cons

Higher level mngt give no support to employees. No follow through on promised promotions, no support when contract ends, they just dump you. Salaries tend not to be competitive, Senior mngt has very poor communication with employees, lack of direction in many fields (especially healthcare it).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Invest in employees. Treat them fairly, realize that they represent your company to the customer.

    Pros

Work Life balance, track A/B schedule. Very Flexible. Good working attitude among peers. Promote ethic and fairness. Pay is above average among industry. very good brand name to put on your resume. Lockheed is about 70% Engineering, they tend to focus more on Engineering. Aerospace is a very small industry, with all the baby boomers set to retire within the next 3 years, they will be alot of position to filled. The working structure is a little different than other company, which mean you have to find a program to work on, if there's no program to work on you will be laid off.

    Cons

Security drawbacks and government is very strict on clearance. They don't necessarily pay well. You had better get it on the front end in most cases. They have to pay on SOME contracts in Cal. There are plenty of people there who will work for nothing and screw the rest of us. I lived in Cal for 10 years. They promise promotions and large increases t get you in the door, but they rarely happen. Hiring managers have goals to make so some will say anything to get you to join. Many of us jump for other companies and then come back at higher pay levels. It's the only way to really make this happen.

The salary bands overlap between levels and Lockheed likes to keep people at or near the medium for the salary band where they reside. That being said, if you get a fantastic review and are at the medium for your salary band, your raise will be next to nothing. If you get an average review and your salary is below the medium, odds are your raise will bring you up to the medium. Pay for performance is a literal joke

    Pros

Wide variety of projects to work on ranging from space based platforms to UAV to ground-based. If you're technically creative there's research money available to get new ideas off the ground. There is no sense of intellectual protectionism, and full credit is given to employees whose ideas are successful. It's easy to move up in the organization if one is willing to take on additional responsibility.

    Cons

Because we work on hardware that is launched into space and cannot be easily serviced, the corporation is extremely conservative in systems design, meaning it's difficult to inject new and interesting technology, and we're frequently weighted down by over-bearing paperwork and process to ensure 1000% mission success.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Learn to take more risks; no company lasts forever if they keep churning out the same hardware.

    Pros

The defense industry is stable, and the work is interesting. You'll never run out of questions about your job at cocktail parties. You can always find projects you can sink your teeth in, and you'll work with some enthusiastic and smart people. You can become an expert in something very few people can do -- build aircraft. There is plenty of opportunity to make a good living for you and your family. If you have hobbies and/or community involvement, you can usually flex your working hours to accommodate them.

    Cons

You're not going to get rich. Or recognized in a satisfying way for that matter. Some people receive rewards, usually not more than a couple hundred dollars, because they made the company tens of thousands (or even millions) of dollars. The aforementioned enthusiastic and smart people are often pursuing other avenues like a side business or education, 1) because they can and 2) they realize the limitations of working in a huge corporation.

Also, as a Gen Xer, I feel the pinch from both generations beside me. The company is hiring tons of college graduates because they're cheap and we need a workforce when the baby boomers retire, and the baby boomers dominate the workforce as it is. I don't see a promotion into leadership for at least 5 years, maybe longer with this ridiculous stock market.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I still don't understand how "leveraging diversity is critical to our corporation's success." Perhaps you could better explain this concept to us, or better yet, return the focus to building aircraft.

Good salary and good people. World reputation is strong. Multiple jobs in the company if you wish to move. Training is adequate. Current Employee - Information Security Manager

    Pros

A large company with many opportunities. Current employees have the ability to apply for jobs all over the country and the world. Current employees are given preference for jobs over outside applicants.

    Cons

Employee evaluations are not easy. LM has tried many methods of evaluating emloyees; and still have not seemed to "get it right". The cap on the number and types of ratings seems unfair.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Fabulous ethics program - keep up the good work - I love the ethics minute.
