I have been working at Lockton Companies full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Team environment (mostly at the AM/AA level), good 401k, good (and getting better) internal resources (word processing services, office services, educational opportunities etc), onsite gym, covered parking, Highly committed to community involvement. Truly believes in delivering superior service and doing the right thing for both their markets and clients.

    Cons

"High Level" associates who haven't come up the ranks unfortunately do not seem to know or understand what it takes to service accounts (from both a technical and operational perspective) which can be a burden to their fellow associates who have to pick up their slack. Staffing levels not adequate given that most accounts are being marketed annually, although it is admittedly difficult to find the right talent at certain levels. Commission compensation to individual producers seems excessive compared to base salaries of those managing their accounts. Internal certificate management system seems archaic.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Require "High Level" Senior Vice Presidents and Account Executives to have an understanding of internal systems, policies and procedures, and continue to improve internal educational opportunities for all. This can only happen if you adequately staff so that accounts can be handled to allow for some breathing room. License AMs. Prequalify clients so as not to waste resources on accounts better suited for a smaller agency.

I worked at Lockton Companies full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

    Great 401(k)
    Community involved
Hearts are in the right place for people in need.

    Cons

Women are second class citizens. Tenure is not rewarded. Compensation after hire does not keep up with competition. Raises are very low except for the "in" crowd.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be fair. Don't just take care of your friends and family. The popular kids get everything. Others have to work harder to pull the load.

I have been working at Lockton Companies full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Hardworking team, dynamic, open to suggestions on workflow and input on how to improve systems. Business is good and lots of accounts available.

    Cons

Expect long hours and travel, never say no to clients no matter the request...means workload can grow exponentially, quickly

I worked at Lockton Companies full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

-Beer Fridays (not really a perk; who wants to get drunk with coworkers? that spells trouble)
    -Pretty office setting

    Cons

-Office gossip (can be severely detrimental)
-Low compensation (wages are not competitive)
-Lockton Company calling itself "the best place to work" is transparent marketing-- very off-putting

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire managers who are not afraid to be frank and have blunt discussions about issues, not a manager who listen to gossip as gospel, who is too afraid of confrontation, and who is passive aggressive.

I worked at Lockton Companies full-time

    Pros

The company as a whole is great. The charity work Lockton does is fantastic.

    Cons

DO NOT WORK IN THE LICENSING DEPARTMENT. The licensing department is the only thing that gives Lockton a bad name. The manager can not be trusted and will micromanage to the point that the entire department is unhappy.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Outsource the Licensing Division.

I worked at Lockton Companies full-time for more than a year

    Pros

If you fit in, you're golden. Competitive pay and decent bonus opportunity. Excellent support and resources provided by the associates in Kansas City (headquarters).

    Cons

If you don't fit in, you'll be out the door in no time. Entrepreneurial sounds great if you're one of the owners. If not, you'll be treated like a grunt. High turnover both voluntarily and involuntarily.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Implement formal policies and procedures, training and best practices. Seriously reconsider micromanaging capable senior-level associates.

Good to great associates, inept management

I worked at Lockton Companies full-time

    Pros

Most if not all of the client-facing associates work hard to deliver a consistent, quality service to their clients, resulting in a professional environment where one can take pride in one's work, and the work of one's colleagues. Internal resources are many, although it can take some time to first identify them and then figure out how to gain access. It's a suitable environment for mid- to senior-level associates who have the technical knowledge and skill set to work autonomously and take the lead where no one else step up. If you are entry- or junior-level, you're better off starting your career at a competitor where you're much more likely to receive formal training.

    Cons

Those who are further removed from producing and retaining revenue haven't the first clue about what it takes to get one's job done here, resulting in a lot of failures when it comes to hiring the right people for the job and having realistic expectations as to job functions and performance. They will talk all day long about their in-house training, the fun social outings they have, how it's like one big family, etc...all to distract the associates from lack of real opportunities that would earn them promotions, salary increases and bonuses. This somewhat works for the younger demographic, not for others who have families to support.

The worst thing about management here is they will say they are 'managing expectations' of the associates, just a phrase used to excuse the outright lying they do whenever they think it necessary. Worse than that is their expectation that supervisors repeat the same lies to their team, nevermind what that does for everyone's morale.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Your business isn't run by the COOs and their support staff, it's run by your producers and client-facing associates. Get rid of the administrative people at the local level and absorb those functions at HQ.
