I worked at Lolapps full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Fantastic community of passionate people. Serious artists who trained traditionally and work hard. Although I was only here for 9 months before the investors killed the company, it is the most amazing place I've worked at so far.

    Cons

I would say the artists were paid less than they were worth overall. Also of course a major bummer when the investors pull the plug and fire 70(3/4's of the company) people out of the blue one day.

I worked at Lolapps full-time for less than a year

    Pros

The people were really cool for the most part. More laid back and scrappy and fun vs. other places I've worked at in the Bay which try too hard to be hip.

Lots of traffic & scaling problems, good place to get experience at scale. Enjoyed working with Python & Pylons vs. Django or Rails or Java or something.

Decent perks (great lunches three days a week).

    Cons

Weekly releases led to pretty consistent late nights.

My salary was pretty low but I was only there for a few months so I didn't get a review / raise yet.

The social & mobile game industry is not a good, stable, positive industry to be in.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Not much to give advice on at this point!

Obviously the business model wasn't so hot.. Social / mobile games are dominated by 1-2 major players (Zynga, King.com) and everyone else is in a race to the bottom.

The Triple Town / Yeti Town thing was a big misstep and just felt like a crappy move.

Merging with 6waves killed the company.

Why acquire so many companies if you're going to go under in a few months?

Getting in bed with 6waves wasn't the right move to make games.

I worked at Lolapps full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Great and talented people. Wonderful perks. Great location. A sincere desire to make quality product.

    Cons

Lack of experience actually developing. Beholden to 6Waves that held the purse strings and ended up shutting down everything but publishing.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Longer term planning and a clear agenda that included development (that everyone including investors) signed up for would have helped. And truly, it was an inner circle run company with most people just peering in.

    I worked at Lolapps

    Pros

Smart and kind people. Some interesting problems and challenges. Lots of users & traffic. Majority of backend code was written in Python. Free drinks, snacks, and lunch.

    Cons

Facebook & social games are ultimately a scammy and unsatisfying area to work in. Questionable business decisions, e.g. acquiring companies and then giving them back a month later.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't count on funding as your business model. If the company can't sustain itself, don't bother growing it to an unsustainable level. By doing that, you're just interrupting a bunch of peoples' lives when you inevitably lay them off.

I worked at Lolapps full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Great team chemistry, several talented contributors across a number of different disciplines. I always felt that I was treated well, and I learned a lot while there.

    Cons

After the merger with 6 Waves, the direction of the company changed. This unfortunately led to layoffs of essentially the entire in-house development staff.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The next time you start a company, make sure that the reasons for a merger are in the best interests of the core business, not just for growth.
