Use caution and ask A LOT of questions if you plan to interview for a position with this company.

I worked at Longview Fibre full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

There are SOME people at this facility who are knowledgeable and that you can learn from - but that will be the ONLY decent training you will receive.

    Cons

Training is practically non-existent, but the expectation is such that you should know all of the information that the senior CSR (who has been at the facility for over 14 years) keeps in her head. There have been more people in the lower level CSR position than you will be told ( IF you ask that question). ONE reason is it is a hostile work environment that can only be tolerated for so long. Very few people will take accountability for their actions or responsibility for their mistakes. If you accept a position here expect to be blamed for every mistake that is made in the plant. Even keeping a record of everything and being as accurate as possible will not help. Management does not use any common sense in these matters. Management will also not listen to any more efficient ways of doing business, they are happy to use paper for everything and take three times the amount of time to do a project. Evaluations are extremely biased ( see above training reference) and although you will be told you have input, that is not the case.

I was fortunate to find new employment while still at this company and was able to walk away - many there feel like they cannot replace their current employment and benefits (retirement etc.) which is sad because a significant amount of them are unhappy and would like to leave. Be wary - If I had it to do over again I would not have worked at this location.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Embrace new and efficient ideas. Learn to actually "LISTEN" and make new people in the organization feel involved and worth the investment. Eliminate unprofessional individuals who sabotage co-workers and make the environment hostile.

I worked at Longview Fibre full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

The pay was very good and the benefits were decent. There was good job security in the past due to being a Union company. That is changing as Unions are losing their ability to bargain effectively with companies.

    Cons

Over the years there were dangerous working conditions that management would overlook; but write you up if you got injured.
    Poor employee/management relations

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat your employees as if they have some value, don't make them choice between their families and having a job.

I worked at Longview Fibre full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Pay was the one mainstay of this company.

    Cons

Progressivlt worsening work conditions and benefits. Every contract a loss to it employeess. Inattentive and disorganized supervision and uppermanagement. Everyone has the own agenda, and non help the declining moral of the workforce. Blame passed down the chain of command.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

While the workers are worried on a daily basis. This company feeds off of it. Union support has been severly weakened through the years. While the push has been to continue working under declining conditions.

I have been working at Longview Fibre

    Pros

Lots of opportunities to (attempt to) make changes in the organization, and leaders are looking seriously at best practices that will enable Longview to grow and build profitability. CFO and mill manager are strong leaders with high, yet reasonable, expectations.

    Cons

Leadership team is not aligned and often confuse "speed to action" with "knee-jerk reaction". Lack of alignment creates duplicity of efforts, wasted time & money, and general confusion about direction.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pick a direction and move towards it ARM IN ARM. Don't be afraid to eliminate under-performers.

    I worked at Longview Fibre

    Pros

Pay scale because of union is ot bad for hourly- salary is not verycompetitive

    Cons

Management is looking for the least little reason thay can use to get rid of employees to continue their quest to make it a contractor labor mill

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

People would be proud to work at Fibre like they used to be if they felt valued and essential and had some job security like when Mr. Wollenberg was running it. Now all the employees feel like numbers, not people.

I have been working at Longview Fibre

    Pros

Fair wages for southwest washington. College grads seem to do well whether they know something or not. Like most companies there seems to be a "good" ol girls club --- helps to be female
and as long as you do what you are told you'll do fine. People who think for themselves (have a brain) are percieved to be bucking the system.. Still a "small" enough company to get to know most of the people and to feel at home in this small town (Longview-/-Kelso is around 100k people).
Cant think of anything else to say --- and I have to type 100 words.

    Cons

Company was bought by Brookfield asset management, and is being "spruced" up to be sold again.
Longview is a "mill" town,,,, the logging industry is slowly deminishing. There are many opportunities for the younger generation who don't expect much of a salary. College grads seem to do well whether they know something or not. Like most companies there seems to be a "good" ol girls club --- helps to be female
and as long as you do what you are told you'll do fine. People who think for themselves (have a brain) are percieved to be bucking the system.. Best of luck...
