    Territory Sales Manager

Territory Manager (Former Employee) Baltimore, MD

ProsTeam members, The people who I worked with are very good. Wasn't sure why some of these people did not go to another company. Valued employees in my opinion.

ConsBe very careful to make sure that your territory is safe. Working with Newport Co. usually puts in urban areas that you may not be familiar with. Management can be very overbearing and totally full of themselves. Work life balance is actually pretty good Pay rate is poor compared to other tobacco companies. This company has no bonus accentive (this is important). So pay rate may seem okay, however in reality not comparable with other companies. Also be careful because this can be a somewhat physical job and there is a good possibility of being injured while working. So make a good decision.

Advice to Senior ManagementJust let your employees do their jobs please. Micromanaging (Big Headed Managers) are the killer for this company.

The blind leading the illusion of competence

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee) Greensboro, NC

ProsIt beats unemployment. Good benefits package. Hands off managment until they decide not to be and make things diificult and miserable.

ConsConstant tinkering with mgmt plans and projects. If the last plan was the end all and be all, why are you changing it yet again 6-12 months later? And again, and again. People with zero knowledge of the subject matter making scientific decisions based on faulty knowledge and unrealistic, unfounded criteria. Self evaluations? Really? You don't have the slightest idea how your own people are doing and can't write it down? Forgot about leeway if you need to go to the doctor, pick up your car from shop, etc.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep focusing on quarters and stock price. Things that matter not to people who aren't getting stock options and 6 figure paychecks. Short term will ruin you in the long run. Keep re-inventing wheels that other people and companies figured out and implemented years ago.

    incompetent management, unhappy workers

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee) Greensboro, NC

Proseven for senior scientists it's pretty much a regular 8-5 work day, good pay; workers are nice to work with

Consa leadership vacuum in the research area; instead of having a small percentage of bad managers, the vast majority of managers/directors are bad, ranging from control freaks to bullies; managers don't greet or even acknowledge people in the hall ways; the morale is very low, everybody is unhappy

Advice to Senior Managementdon't think current management in research has a chance to turn it around; distrust and dislike to too deeply ingrained in workers

Inconsistent message, all about numbers to impress/satisfy the next level of management

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) Baltimore, MD

    Proscompetitive benefit and compensation package

ConsAgain all emphasis is put on numbers with less regard to business judgement. Manager's primary concern is to be the top of the "list" regardless of what market dictates.

Advice to Senior ManagementThere is a great improvement in communication, but listening is the key.

    Good company - excellent benefits-well-managed

Sales Representative (Current Employee) Cheyenne, WY

ProsSelf -direction, working independently, opportunity to make excellent salary, benefits are excellent, thanks to ownership of insurance company - of couse, one arm of the company sortof creats the clientele for the other. Wonderful perks like minimum 5 weeks vacation, great retirement, company vehicle, and you can set your own schedule. If you get a good
group of people to work with - this job is wonderful.

ConsLadder-climbing junior management create situations and trim staff to suit their ambitions - costing the company some of its best and brightest. Also - never tell your kids what you do for a living, since they will be hounded at school
by the anti-smokers. Get use to people asking you for freebie cartons. And you mightas well take up smoking yourself, since most staff meetings are in smoke-fileld rooms.

Advice to Senior ManagementRespect your staff more -trust their judgment - they are the noes in the trenches in what is a very unpopular occupation

Work here if you want to stay below the radar, not advance, collect your pension and retire.

    Sales Representative (Former Employee)

ProsThe benefit package (specifically, health and vacation) was excellent. Employees are given the opportunity to balance career and personal family life.

ConsVery little opportunity for advancement. Management is not willing to consider new or fresh ideas. Company is financially conservative which brings down moral since there are few perks. There is absolutley no or very little opportunity for advancement and a very high turnover.

Advice to Senior ManagementEvaluate middle management's performance. Although Lorillard claims to have an "open - door" policy, suggestions fall on deaf ears. Certain areas in the country have extremely high turn over, which is an indication of low moral and poor treatment. These areas should be a red flag or indication that there are serious problems with middle management in these areas.
