    Pros

Good salary, excellent work-life balance. Flex hours and with schedule like 9/80, one can spend lot of time with family!

    Cons

Poor growth opportunities, promotions driven more by whom-you-know than how-good-you-have performed! Outdated research! Not much exciting projects especially in biosciences.

    Advice to Management

Promote research by rewarding good scientific publications; promote developing new processes and acquire key patents!

  6. Incredible scientific community with very interesting interdisciplinary projects.

    Pros

Los Alamos is one of the best DOE laboratories to work in science. The major advantage is the comprehensive research that can be done here, since the lab has a lot of infrastructure and expertise in all aspects of science. From theoretical to experimental scientists, the projects enjoy the whole spectrum of scientific endeavor.

    Cons

One the major obstacles is the burdensome and crippling bureaucracy everywhere in the lab. Additionally, the overhead to bring in new funding is way higher than in many institutions, making it extremely difficult to get grants into the lab.

    Advice to Management

Reduce management! There are way too many managers, which financially burdens the scientific community at LANL in form of overhead.

    Pros

Large enterprise class network. Fast internet. Highly trained tech support. Small community up in the Jemez mountains with very little crime. Great hospital and best school system in the state!

    Cons

Atmosphere has changed over the last 20 years. Very little espre de corps there any more. New guy's don't have any retirement possibility, just standard benefit's these days.

    Advice to Management

Get rid of the do nothings, and the people who are retired in place.

  8. My experience depended on which project I worked on.

    Pros

I was there for a summer internship. The research was very interesting, and that got me very motivated to do the work. I learned a lot that summer, it was one of my favorite research projects to date! My mentors and everyone in my group were all amazing people: very friendly and very smart, and they really cared about their interns. The pay was also very good, considering I was only an undergraduate at the time.

    Cons

It's placed in a very boring, small town. There's one movie theater and a few restaurants and that's about it. If it wasn't for this I would have seriously considered returning to Los Alamos as a postdoc after my PhD. But I like big cities so for me that's a deal breaker. If you're OK with commuting everyday you could live in Santa Fe (a lot of people do!), but I find that would be too much of a haste for me.

    Pros

LANL has some very talented staff that does great work.

    Cons

Talented staff is thwarted by bureaucracy which has increased overhead and decreased performance simultaneously. Rules are not employed uniformed.

    Advice to Management

Double-dipping was NOT a good idea and has adversely affected people relying on the pension fund.
