    Pros

excellent, passionate people working there. flexible hours, good benefits. very up to date on issues, people are friendly and open.

    Cons

everyone has a slight "beat the system" mentality because of the extreme amounts of bureaucratic hoops one must jump through to get anything done.

    Pros

Great benefits, mostly dedicated staff, really hard to get fired, stable. LA County better off financially than most other government. Fairly friendly culture, many exciting and varied topics to get involved in.

    Cons

No professional growth, stagnant salaries, ludicrous bureaucratic process to get on hiring lists for positions that may or may not exist, really hard to fire people that should be fired. Too much to do, not enough people. Under supported department in the County structure. If you're a salaried (exempt) employee out of step increases you get what you get in pay - no bonuses or COLA and good luck trying to get a promotion. Also, out of the box thinking encouraged verbally with no follow-through or actual implementation. It's a bureaucracy.

    Advice to Management

It would be helpful if there was some follow through on the many, many promises of "department reorganization to enhance effectiveness and employee opportunity." You have dedicated staff who go above and beyond what most consider a typical government worker. Yet that dedication is not recognized by fostering growth into higher positions. A number of managers are retiring in the next few months and years and there are few individuals really able to step into those roles because their current positions are regimented and in a silo. Foster growth.

    Pros

Working in a multi-cultural environment and exposure to other medical and scientific professionals. Established work weeks including a 4 day work week. Excellent Union health benefits and paid holidays.

    Cons

New management style breeds favoritism, greed by increasing public health licenses and fees, cronyism, and lacks value for experienced Public Health professionals that conduct inspections and interact with residents of Los Angeles County daily. EH Management have spent millions of dollars on software companies in the last decade with little reprisal or held responsible by County officials.

    Advice to Management

Because of new directors, executive staff, their cronies and their selfish ambitious pursuit for recognition they have destroyed employee morale and thrown institutional knowledge into the gutter. Please consider engaging with experienced and dedicated EH professionals that have invested a career in Public Health and developed deep rooted relationships within communities throughout Los Angeles County.

    Pros

It's a great place to work. If you get on fulltime, the benefits are great. The people are really nice to work with.

    Cons

It's sometimes difficult to get on staff because you have to test to get hired, and it can be difficult to move up the ladder for the same reason.

  11. Can be very rewarding but will also face typical government work politics and attitudes

    Pros

When I'm collaborating with colleagues and agencies and connecting with the public and medical providers in a manner that effectively provides education and to protect the public in a timely manner, in other words to accomplish our mission of minimizing and controlling infectious disease, it is really rewarding!

    Cons

People won't or can't step up to work outside of their official duties. The atmosphere is thick with an attitude of this is how it's been done so we're not going to do anything differently. It can feel stagnant and demoralizing.

    Advice to Management

I'd like management to be more positive, inclusive, and creative.
