    Pros

Great benefits and opportunity to work in diverse areas within the County of Los Angeles.

    Cons

The County of Los Angeles is not a meritocracy and the opportunity for advancement is not always based on performance.

I have been working at Los Angeles County

    Pros

Benefits and fixed schedules are great but don't be fooled you won't get them until a year of service.

    Cons

Outrageously slow hiring process. Promotions are reserved for cronies who are unqualified or incompetent.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Embrace talent and remove the mentality of "it's always been this way"

I worked at Los Angeles County full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Good retirement. Diverse environment, including management.

    Cons

Majority of IT managers have no IT background; also English is second language to many managers and workers, which hampers communication. Many workers converse among themselves in their native language, even at meetings.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

English proficiency should be required for advancement to management positions. There are Toastmasters Club within the County that would help with communication skills.

    Disapproves of CEO

    Pros

Benefits, People, Opportunities, Benefits and Pension CEO is great!!! The people make the place, alternative work schedule so you can reclaim me some of your life. Work Life means something.

    Cons

If you want to move up you better have time to spare, you can get stuck in a position for a long time which will kill your motivation. Pay is lower than in the private sector but makes up for it in other ways.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Connect with your employees

    Pros

The benefits, union, and job securities make this job awesome.

    Cons

The job security makes it a loophole for people who don't like to work to not do so and still maintain employment.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Not any real concerns at the moment

I worked at Los Angeles County full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Good union, if that's important; no bias whatsoever either. Ease of entry-level hiring, once you've "jumped through the proper hoops". Little if any dress code (within reason)

    Cons

Little off the job inter personal interaction. Little promotion opportunity available. Parking facilities in L.A. and Norwalk are severely limited.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to constructive criticism. Your employees wouldn't raise the issue were there not something very wrong. I praise the pro-activity I was able to witness when I worked there

Former Employee - Systems Analyst in Los Angeles, CA

I worked at Los Angeles County full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Within the limitations, a generally secure job and great benefits. Many opportunities to move around laterally in a department and outside a department. Steady step raises but can max out a certain level until a promotion. Raises are not guaranteed and depends on the fiscal situation. Learn to navigate the obstacles there and it will be a great job, even a career.

    Cons

One cannot simply change the world through government, any government. LAC is a big machine that does not turn quickly and runs over lots of people in the process. Politics sets the agenda so the pursuit of excellence, and other virtues, are looked upon with suspicion, even optional. Definitely not an environment for everyone as compromises galore will exist in terms of performance, quality, innovation, and creativity.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Worry less about your own paychecks and more about doing the right thing.
