I have been working at Los Angeles as a contractor (less than an year)

    Pros

Location, relaxed work environment (not a lot of evils of corporate America), can maintain work life balance better here.

    Cons

Some teams within the city are far behind in technology, too much hierarchy, typical "government attitude", red tape. Of course, there are exceptions to the rule, but this is typical.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It's got the best working environment more favorable to employees. Some may be pushing it. Several people who should have retired continue to work and that brings down (in my opinion) overall performance. At the time, I am sympathetic to the city employees that built their life there - some have been working there for over 40+ years. They cannot simply go out and survive. City should create some alternate programs/projects, so some of these employees can phase out slowly and lead way to more youngsters. Mere pension plan isn't enough.

On the other hand, unions seem to be controlling a lot of those. While I am a proponent of unions in general (I believe this balances the evils of corporate America), some of the union decisions seem ludicrous. For e.g., at the city, a lot of IT works belong to the same union as the Janitors - no disrespect to them, but I feel the priorities and the work style of the 2 groups are totally different (opposite?) that for IT employees, the union feels like a misfit.

    I worked at Los Angeles

    Pros

Great place to work for. The benefits of working for the city are top notch. Depending on where you are assigned the job can be very exciting.

    Cons

The management is not there to help you. With the camera phones that everyone has now , it is really difficult to be an officer in this day and age. Once you get in trouble the department WILL NOT back you up.

I worked at Los Angeles as a contractor (more than 5 years)

    Pros

If you want to help beat down the cost of government, there is no more direct way than working for them.

    Cons

Technology was not really cutting edge. Purchases of new hardware, and software was a bit of an uphill battle.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Suggest continuing to work on bringing in the right talent to work on consolidation efforts, and implement more technology with both the short and long term outlook. It will also be important to consider upkeep costs of technologies, both for adopting new, and continuing to keep the old technology around past it's expiration date.
