  6. Productive tight-knit community

I worked at Louisiana Tech University part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Relaxed atmosphere allows space to work independently and the convenience of coming to associates for collaborative efforts when questions arise. A smaller community breads close ties, which can be extremely beneficial and productive.

    Cons

The tight-knit circles can be preventative, turning the advantage of a small community into unintended isolation for those not in the circle. Bureaucracy impedes work-flow and not knowing how to navigate the administration can make it difficult to maintain pace.

    Advice to Management

Spend the effort to reorganize the structures that exist and responsibilities of those within the institution with more regard for the new context of rapidly changing environments to help facilitate efficiency in everyday tasks that keep individual's work-flow at pace and creates an increased proficiency from all levels of administration.

I have been working at Louisiana Tech University full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Very quiet environment, perfect for someone who is internally driven to study. Ruston is a sleepy town with very little distractions

    Cons

As a grad student, you are the only one responsible for yourself. You get little to no compensation, very little networking is to be found, and there are few few chances of advancing your career. Tech pretends to be a graduate school, with little to no support for the grad students.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your graduate students, retain your better students, compensate them better, treat them like people, especially if you want to see Tech emerge as a research institution.

I worked at Louisiana Tech University part-time

    Pros

The pay for students are 7.25 an hour with a guaranteed 35 hours a week. You also get a free apartment what ever building you get assigned. You get paid to socialize with students and help them get acquainted at the university.

    Cons

The office is ran by women which is not bad however their is a bias towards women over men. The bosses do run their mouth too much but you only have to see them at weekly meeting or to turn in paper work.
