Pros
the pay was alright compared to working at other factories. the best thing about Lowe's was the ability of working overtime.
Cons
the downside of working at lowe's is that you almost have to be in good shape to do to the work. the work requires alot of walking and carrying heavy boxes
Advice to Senior Management
the management at lowes was pretty good. the treat everybody fair, and their are usually pretty cool with calling in when your sick
Pros
Will work around your schedule if you are part-time, training is decent. Was one of the less cut throat sales jobs I have had. Despite all of my gripes below, I enjoyed working there up until I chose to seek out a more rewarding position.
Cons
They have tuition reimbursement, but you have to be a Full-Time employee to be eligible. The store I was at changed their policy to where you must have open availability to be full-time, making it impossible to go to school. Every year available bonuses were cut more and more, and they even cut out the few dollars they used to give as a Christmas bonus. They will schedule as few employees as possible to cut labor hours, even with customers openly complaining about lack of help. In doing so, certain employees are forced to cover multiple departments, all so the store can save on labor hours (which will in turn be added to managements quarterly bonus.)
Advice to Senior Management
Stop pushing out the older employees to make way for your "weekend warriors" just because you can pay them less and not give them benefits.
Order management is a joke.
Pros
Good benefits, decent pay, good vacation
Cons
Antique technology, the iphone is a joke, weighs about 2 pounds does very little. Internet is slower than a 3g connection. Hoping the technology improves.
Advice to Senior Management
FAST internet for all the technology you preach is coming! Need to have a good foundation before you build a house! Unrestrict the computers and make the terminals on the floor real PCs so that employees can help customers without endless logging in and jumpin through hoops just to get to an internet connection similar to fast dial up.
Pros
It's very easy to advance in a large retailer like Lowe's if you are willing to relocate and do your job slightly better than their minimum standards.
Cons
The 'Lowe's Experience of the Future' is essentially a downsizing of the company and restructuring of the retail model. In the next 10-15 years do NOT expect to see as many Lowe's stores around as you do now. Retail is moving to warehousing and internet sales, and this is where Lowe's is going. In the process, their longtime/experienced/knowledgeable employees are getting out while they can. This is a reality of retail sales people! Don't plan on being a Lowe's employee for the long haul. Also, management has issues communicating with each other and employees. I wasn't made aware of the ability to take a leave of absence to go back to school, and could have had Lowe's reimburse my tuition expenses until after I had already cut down to part time, took a cut in pay and eventually wound up having to leave the company. After 7yrs off and on with Lowe's, I can without a doubt say they have severely alienated their experienced employees, there is a noticeable lack of concern among the store management (perhaps related to the direction the company is heading), and it trickles down to the lowest levels of employees. There is a serious drop off in customer service, and the company has created metrics and made it nearly impossible to achieve bonuses anymore.
Advice to Senior Management
Management needs to follow through on their promises to employees more (promises of raises, incentives, etc), learn the products their employees are selling better, better communicate with their employees and other managers on changes that happen daily. Human Resources and Loss Prevention don't report to the Store Managers and this makes for contradicting and often controversial decisions, fix this!
Pros
-Good health care for FT and PT
-Two of our managers actually care about their employees, including the store manager
-Pay is more than fair
-Lowe's wants to keep employees. They care about who leaves and don't want to force anybody out the door.
Cons
Drama, drama, DRAMA! My store is all DRAMA! The other people at an equal position to me are impatient and unhelpful, even though I've just started in this company. I guess I'm supposed to know every policy, procedure, and item after only a month of working there! They expect you to learn a lot of it on your own, which would okay if the information were easier to find. It's hard to get access to Lowe's Net to learn during the day because the store is so busy. There's no real time to sit and teach yourself anything, and (my training, at least) was bs.
And work/life balance? If you're FT, forget that! Your hours will suck, and despite the amazing pay, I'm not sure it's worth my grades dropping through the floor.
Plus, my store has some drama going on right now that's incredibly annoying. If a better job offer comes along, I'll hop on it just to get away from all the trouble!
Advice to Senior Management
Train your employees better! Develop a full training routine for each position, especially management and *especially* if you're going to hire outside for a management job! It's impossible to learn everything right away, so have more patience with your employees! Impact hours are stupid too. More often than not, we all end up just standing around. There's only so many times one can straighten an end cap, guys.
Pros
While working at Lowe's, I was able to have a tone of hand on learning in regards to cashier and customer service.
Cons
While working at Lowe's, your shifts can be long and hectic especially on holidays where their are an increased amount of customers.
Pros
Lots of hours if you want them. Nice pay for the position. Co-workers are nice. Management is competent. Store is clean and a nice environment to work in.
Cons
A lot of standing around with nothing to do when slow. Training process is slow and boring. It takes about a week to complete on a computer in an office.
Pros
Good pay for college student. Scheduling will allow for making money but also for needed time off. Environment was great. Will be able to learn A LOT while employed there.
Cons
Career advancement seems to be based a lot on, yes how well qualified, but also how long you've worked there. Slow advancement. Hard work.
Pros
Good Training Great Co-Workers Reasonable Hours
Cons
Low Pay and Short Shifts
Advice to Senior Management
Keep Communication Open
Pros
Secure job in bad economy
Cons
The technology is very crude, new programs roll out frequently only to be forgotten shortly thereafter. It's basically one crisis after another. Leave your logic at the door and try not to think......just follow the latest hair brained scheme of the week.
Advice to Senior Management
Taking away commissions after using them to negotiate a lower starting wage is underhanded and deceptive.
