I have been working at Lunds part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The job allows for immense personal growth and opportunity through advancement; I have been promoted 4 times in as many years. Additionally, we are expanding quickly.

    Cons

The work can sometimes be tedious as it is a retail position. There can be a lack of training at times going into new positions, but it has gotten better even in the time I have been with the company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Keep on opening stores!

I worked at Lunds part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Mostly nice co-workers, good working environment, culture and values. There are some fun little perks like the "New Hire Referral" program. I trained in 3 different stores, some training was better than others. Byerly's is a good place to work if you're young and just starting out and wish to grow through their system.

    Cons

They've taken a corporate stance against Obamacare and are presently hiring only part-time employees working less than 30 hours per week. (I was told this in my interviews-twice) Part-timers pay union dues but get little in return for them. Full-time positions become available to apply for, but there are many hoops to jump through and seniority is a major factor in the decision. Corporate management and the union often dictate what jobs and who can be placed them at the store level, which is not always best for the store or the employees. There seem to be very few women in upper managerial positions. Unfortunately, if you are older, experienced, and have a specific expertise, you still start at square 1 and must move through their system, regardless of your background. However, they are not upfront about this fact. They hire expertise to get them in the fold but then have them work in other departments. Only after asking numerous people and times did I find out that I did not have the job I thought I'd been hired to do.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Figure out a way to move beyond the union rules so that you can hire expertise from the outside. If you're not going to give full-time status, find a way for part-timers to be exempt from the union. Promote more women to General Manager and Store Manager as well as corporate managerial positions.

I have been working at Lunds full-time

    Pros

Great vision by top leadership, excellent training and development programs, good reputation within community, great company success in a failing market.

    Cons

Limited growth paths, inconsistent company initiatives, divide between corporate expectations and realistic store conditions, difficult to get to management on board with ideas at store level, some weak performers in leadership positions, some important players are not very compassionate to employee needs.

I have been working at Lunds full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

I have worked at Lunds and Byerly's stores for over a decade and never thought I'd still be here. They have done everything imaginable to better the employee experience while maintaining their business acumen. It's like home, no matter which location I work at. They have added great advancement programs to help individuals develop into great leaders.

    Cons

Sometimes people get left in the dust for whatever reason, you get told you're more than qualified but someone else gets the position because they "know someone".

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep up the training opportunities, because they are ideal for people my age trying to better themselves while staying with the company. Go Krag!
