I worked at Lyric Opera of Chicago as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

The majority of the staff are very friendly and generally supportive of interns depending on the department you work for. Learning about how opera productions work is extremely exciting especially during opera season. Some of the donor clients I worked with were the sweetest, kindest people I ever came across.

    Cons

Office environment seems pretty conservative and passive-aggressive. Internship program did not really provide much experience. Upper-level management ignores the lower level like crazy. Some employees in the departments run in cliques and do not want to involve you in anything if it does not involve collaborating on some meager assignment.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please be open to new ideas and strongly consider changing the office environment to have a more participatory experience.

I have been working at Lyric Opera of Chicago full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Attending the opera and being apart of the preservation of the art form is amazing. The events produced are stunning and make you proud to work for the institution.

    Cons

It is the most catty place I have ever worked. That fact, paired with the meager pay is frustrating. There is no repercussion for constant poor behavior but I do believe that could be changing.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

This company needs to learn how to mentor and foster their young employees. So many passionate young fundraisers have left because of this lacking mentality.

I worked at Lyric Opera of Chicago as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

Great and fun work, amazing mission aims, interesting environment with high profile figures who love what they do and are good at doing it. Beautiful building, unbelievable view, central location. There is a lot of pride to be had when you tell people that you work here.

    Cons

Most of middle management is highly lacking in creativity or talent. There's a ton of petty political backstabbing and rumor milling, to the point where it seems that people only seem interested in getting credit for what they did or did not do, and trying to show off that they should be taken more seriously, instead of actually trying to be a contributing and valuable team member, looking out for the future of the company. Outsiders are shafted, as company openings are generally given internally to people who are not necessarily better fits, but who have just stuck around long enough with the terrible salaries to get there. That said, the most innovative and forward thinking people bolt at the first opportunity for something better because they feel that there is no bright future ahead of them for this company. Lower tier workers are often shafted, get paid a substandard wage, have to deal with unnecessary crap from payroll, and have no chance of moving up, as better jobs seem to always be filled from outside of the company. Everyone likes to 'appear' busy, but there's no communication even within departments, and the bureaucracy wasn't pretty.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Restructure. Out with the old, in with the new. Seniority does not equate to being able to keep up with the times. There is a lot of contempt held toward middle management. It might behoove you to figure out why and find a solution for this problem. Ignoring problems doesn't make anything better for anyone.

    Pros

Friendly staff, excellent reputation. People at the Lyric love to help you learn about their jobs. Staff all work together to complete projects.

    Cons

Internships could be more challenging. They are a great learning experience, but lack in seriously challenging tasks.

I worked at Lyric Opera of Chicago full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

The staff is friendly and the donor-base is very involved. You learn a lot very quickly during the opera season, and will find many mentors in each department who will help your career grow.

    Cons

There is still much passive-aggressive behavior from colleagues, and a communication barrier between departments. There are always many areas that are still a bit behind and not thinking with an open-mind. Senior-level staff is not open to hearing lower-level ideas.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

My advice to management would be to include others openly about what occurs within each department. Make it easier and friendlier so lower-level employees can share their ideas and opinions about the company goals and projects.
