    Pros

Leader in mud engineering, best school in the country, name trusted by customers

    Cons

Since sold to Schlumberger, management seems to be making random decisions that don't make business sense.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Schlumberger should let MI run itself as it has in the past. They were the industry leader, obviously they knew what they were doing.

I have been working at M-I SWACO full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Can get very good experience and international travel if on the right project and have one of the few good managers around.

    Cons

The appearance the management gives is completely false. They tell you what they think you want to hear but then do what ever they feel like doing to help advance their own careers. They will not hesitate about "throwing you under a bus" if it suites them. They openly suppress talent and deny promotions if they feel that your initiative and expertise is dangerous to them. There are numerous incompetent managers with shaky credentials promoted as a result of their connections within upper echelons.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management needs to get rid of the cronyism and also not be afraid that an employee might have a skill set or knowledge that they do not.

Former Employee - Drilling Fluids Specialist II in Midland, TX

I worked at M-I SWACO full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Great training school, company truck (personal use is taxed). Benefits/insurance

    Cons

Management/leadership was scattered and never thought more than a day ahead. The disorganization meant that we often did not know where or if we going to work your next two week shift. It was very difficult to plan or budget when you did not know when you would be back to work again. Paid on a base salary plus day rate. That is only ok when you know you have consistent work. 24 hr shifts for 14 days, leaves some legal questions on overtime law as well. See current lawsuit

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Plan ahead, communicate with your employees, give them an idea of what is going on. Last minute cancellations of work or last minute calls for assignments does not breed confidence in management or job security.

    Pros

The schedule was great. All managers were easy to communicate with and training was efficient. Very good support structure. Excellent benefits

    Cons

The only cons that I can think of were the long hours and the large amount of driving that was required to move to and from rigs.

    Pros

An international company and a part of Schlumberger. May look good on the resume if pursuing career in this field.

    Cons

The appearance is false. There are certain sectors and management groups in the HQ that operate as independent entities using HR as a cover up. They openly suppress talents and deny promotions. contrary to the normal practices in the US, initiative and expertise can be dangerous criteria. Many incompetent managers with shaky credentials promoted as a result of their connections within upper echelons.

good benefits, company truck for to and from jobs.

    Cons

If you are not in middle management, the wages are terrible considering the industry they are in.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Former Employee - Waste Injection Operator in Anchorage, AK

I worked at M-I SWACO full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The operators are good people and all care about each other and safety.

    Cons

The pay operating and maintaining technical equipment starts out lower than a day one rig hand hired to paint the stairs and hand rails. As you gain more experience you are never given a raise and usually offered a promotion that includes a higher level of responsibility for the same pay (seeing a trend here). Offered a lot of opportunity to receive training and become certified through classroom instruction but instead was given on the job training and never sent to any schooling.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Start investing in your employees with education/training and begin a published plan based on time at the company and completed training/position in order to maintain a consistent advance in compensation.
