    Pros

People do what they say they're going to do. There's a high level of integrity and professionalism. You will find smart people who work hard to run a solid company. Generally speaking, clients that know M Squared love M Squared.

    Cons

Despite 25+ years in the Bay Area the company struggles with identity. M Squared is not a well known name in consulting.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Bring in younger talent in fresh areas of expertise.

I worked at M Squared Consulting full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Unique offering. Great co--workers. Good pay and benefits. Nice location in financial district of SF...although the building was old an funky!

    Cons

Somewhat confused about value proposition to the market...is it a consulting firm, or is it a staffing firm, or is it both?!!!. Fairly political, with some "old timers" holding a lot of power. At the time it was owned by a South African holding company (this is no longer the case, as it was recently sold to Solomon Edwards!)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Pros

Account managers really do go to bat for consultants when employers start playing games.
Attempts to build esprit du corps do appear sincere.

    Cons

Having to deal with two management chains--M^3s and the ultimate employers.
90% of employment experience determined by the ultimate employer, 10% M^3
Really expensive healthcare. Unsubsidized COBRA from former employer was significantly cheaper than M^3's employee rates.

I worked at M Squared Consulting as a contractor (less than a year)

    Pros

M Squared makes you feel you belong to their team even though you're an independent consultant. Your engagement manager is very accessible and there to help you any time there is an issue.

    Cons

The engagement lasts only as long as the project you're working on, but that's the nature of an independent consultant's career.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The Bullhorn site should allow consultants to remove old documents from their profile, and to review the documents they have uploaded.

I worked at M Squared Consulting as a contractor (more than a year)

    Pros

Flexible work schedule, ability to telecommute, unlimited time off (unpaid by M Squared), consultants I worked with were extremely knowledgeable and professional

    Cons

They talk the talk but can't walk the walk. Mandated 2 rate reductions resulting in a rate I would not have considered 10 years ago.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If you want to hire and keep talented and highly-qualified staff, you will need to find a way to take a bigger hit to your own pocket.

I have been working at M Squared Consulting as a contractor (more than 10 years)

    Pros

A core group of strong consultants, with expertise in Financial Services, Healthcare and Technology provide good value to clients looking to augment staff for project-based initiatives.

    Cons

    1) An incompetent and in some cases unethical senior management team has destroyed the innovation and enthusiasm of M Squared employees and consultants alike. It has become a poisonous environment in which to work 2) Self-serving and over-engineered delivery and billing "solutions" that provide no value and waste client/consultant/employee time.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Learn to lead and to empower others. Worry less about posturing and credit-taking and more about engaging your employees and consultants. Focus on simplifying delivery and billing structures.

I have been working at M Squared Consulting full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

M Squared Consulting is a stable, mature company with a solid management team. They deliver a high level of consulting expertise to clients and a model which supports tightly managed, deliverables-focused project work for experienced, independent consultants. They have the most seasoned, focused, and competent recruiters in the business. They offer paid sabbaticals after a certain number of years of service. They have a strong corporate responsibility program which gives back to the community in a number of substantive ways.

    Cons

The same process and model which supports the tightly managed deliverables-focused projects can slow down the engagement process and require a lot of time and trust on the part of our consultants who are not paid unless they are billing/chargeable.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep focused on your core clients who understand, appreciate, and value the level of expertise of the consultants who you can deliver.

I have been working at M Squared Consulting

    Pros

The best part of working at M Squared is working with the many interesting independent consultants. They have amazing backgrounds and are wonderful to work with. It is satisfying to find a great consultant and place them at a client. Also, the employees try hard and work magic with the limited tools at their disposal.

The location of the office is right in the heart of the financial district, with lots of amenities and public transportation nearby. The company has a simple business model which works well - find a need at a client, find the right talent on the web, present and place the consultant at the client.

    Cons

At one time, we had a mission and passion that was larger than just making money. Management has changed, and so has the company. Gone is the internal esprit de corps, external customer focus, and mission to serve the independent consultant community. It has been replaced with sales contests, tracking boards, and employee "performance improvement" programs. Multiple rounds of layoffs has left us "survivors" somewhat disillusioned. It is also getting harder to find unique talent as online job boards have leveled the playing field of recruiting the top talent.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Let's get back to making the solving of client business problems the priority over internal sales metrics.
