Pros
- Free summer housing
- Great work hours (40/week)
- Training programs (depending on the division you are placed in)
- Tight-knit internship (Summer MDP) group
Cons
- Pay was relatively low
- Some employees are technologically challenged (depending on your division - I did not have this problem but heard this from other interns)
- Ancient central technology
Advice to Senior Management
- Hire more technically adept people
- Adapt better to changes in commercial banking sphere
- Upgrade central technology platform from Windows XP
Pros
My lead cared for me as a person and was genuinely interested in advancing my career.
Cons
Seemed to be lower pay than other jobs.
Advice to Senior Management
Our CEO visited our branch and knew most of us by name
Pros
People are extremely friendly and outgoing.
Cons
Innovation is stifled. Very static and resistant to change. Management makes poor hiring decisions.
Advice to Senior Management
Actively recruit young talent. Expand MDP and EA programs. Compensate better.
Pros
Benefits, other employees. That covers it.
Cons
Was lied to about over all comp. Was a 70k difference
Advice to Senior Management
Do what you say you'll do
Pros
Flexible hours and nice people make for a great work environment which really makes the day go by much quicker
Cons
Although I really enjoyed my time there, I was a little bored of the work. It was very repetitive, but that may have just been my position
Advice to Senior Management
Take the feedback of your employees and make sure that everyone has an opportunity to advance in their professional life
Pros
Well compensated for a summer job, you do get to meet a lot of senior management, get a picture of how the bank works
Cons
The work can be extremely boring and mundane, filling out excel spreadsheets and access databases all day. Many of the people working there don't seem particularly exciting.
Advice to Senior Management
Make the place more dynamic, rather than so mediocre. Make sure projects are thought out ahead of time for interns.
Pros
- I enjoy being a teller and interacting with customers.
- They have a pretty good benefit package and an expensive price.
- Made some really close friends in the past two years working for my branch!
Cons
- Management goes behind your back and talks about you to other employees.
- Threaten they would fire the whole branch if the service scores don't improve when we all know it's the bank in general they do not care for and the surveys are getting old now!
- Never recognizes anyone who has done well but wills always point out the negative.
- Management has other employees do their work for them on top of doing our work
Plenty more of cons to many too list!
Pros
Employees respect each other for the difficulty of working for a bank, good benefits plan, fiscally sound bank and low to no negative publicity.
Cons
Where do I start? A year ago, I was proud to work for bank but things have gone south very quickly, as our "time tested model" is being challenged more than ever yet the stubborness still remains. Retail Banking employees are victims of the circumstances they are given. These circumstances are the following:
- Asked to work hard instead of smart. The processes and technology create huge inefficiencies thus wasting productivity and money.
- We spend more on the wrong things and not enough on the things to help brand, and improve the company to offer better service and products to the customers.
- Salaried employees will never get more than 3% a year for exceptional performance, and are asked to work 60 hours or more aweek, or face the "their are people waiting for your job".
- Sr. Management only wants to respond to the "good"stuff and ignore the "ugly", which wil slowly haunt them.
- Management asks for feedbcak constantly form employees, vendors and customers through surveys but makes no concertd effort to act on them with this valuable informaton.
- Employee Engagement is a joke, for example, each branch is given a budget of $200 for the year!
- The work life balance does not exists as the staffing model does not support the workload given.
- Too may AV's, VP's and not enough empowerment to better the workplace.
- If you speak up, you are viewed as negative, or a troublemaker and it spreads quickly.
- We have no true support system, managers in retail do way too much reporting and administrative duties.
- We react very slowly to marketplace changes and expect customers to wait becauseo f our "relationship" . We do not sell "value", and think all people should bank with us.
- Goals can be unrealistic, and the tools given are merely sufficient to get the job done. It's quantity over quality.
- The bank takes too little risks with loans. And lose profitable customers along the way. So sad.
- We do nothing to win new prospects but everything to save existing customers?
Advice to Senior Management
Create a task force and act on it. Create different products for different regions. Get innovative and stand out in the marketplace. Spread the wealth.
Pros
They start you off at a pretty good wage.
Basic clerical duties
You get some extra money from commission
You get to help people
M&T people are generally warm and kind
Team oriented workplace
Cons
It's hard to get a raise
You will be stuck in rush hour traffic
With the right management you can improve your weaknesses and play up strengths, but under the wrong management you will not feel this is a satisfying or rewarding job.
They have strict rules and policies.
Have to work saturdays.
Advice to Senior Management
Make sure to have branch huddles/meetings and make sure everyone' s voice is heard. Don't be so critical- I'd like to see you try to do what tellers do daily. Show you are interested in your employees with little acts of kindness. You are on salary and I'm amazed you're complaining.
Pros
They offer good benefits, and are generally flexible with work/home balance. They offer a few perks for employees, like a bank account and an employee discount website.
Cons
They are not competitive with salary. Unfortunately, this causes many of their best people to leave when competitors offer more money.
Advice to Senior Management
If M&T would like to boost employee satisfaction, then they should offer competitive salaries like local competitors do.
