I worked at M&T Bank full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

The people (your colleagues) and vacation time.

    Cons

It is all about the shareholders (mostly upper management).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If you don't focus on the next generation of leaders (v. the upper management that won't be around in 10 years), you will continue to lose these people to the competition. What are you doing to incentivize the people that have been with M&T for 5-10 years? They will be the ones that will be around 15 years from now.

    I worked at M&T Bank full-time

    Pros

Great Management, Flexible Time Off, Good Benefits and 401K match

    Cons

Little upward mobility, behind on technology

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get more advanced technology to be more competitive with other banks. Come on, no mobile deposits? Other banks have been doing this for years now. We are really lacking in the technology department.

I have been working at M&T Bank full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

The bank is growing and on a recent acquisition binge which doesn't show signs if letting up in the near future. That means there's is room for growth and expansion depending on the department you're in, but likely most of them. Pay is higher than average for comparable jobs, at least in the Western New York area. This is a bank that cares about it's bottom line, obviously, but it also cares about the communities it operates in and it's employees, in as much as you would expect from a bank.

    Cons

Benefits could be better but are roughly on par with most regional and large banks. The 401(k) match could be more generous.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

None at this time. Opportunity is plentiful.

M&T needs to focus more on retention of good talent

    Current Employee - Anonymous Employee

I have been working at M&T Bank

    Pros

Willingness to train employees. Good vacation policy. Don't expect you to work late hours. Work/life balance is good in most regions. Stable job.

    Cons

Management plays "favorites" with good old boys club and makes it an uncomfortable environment to work in if you don't fit within that group.

Extremely difficult to get things done because everyone has to provide their feedback/input. Too many layers. Very slow to make decisions.

So many bottlenecks, micromanagers, and control freaks. Unwilling to change and grow with the times. Completely outdated and inefficient systems, files, etc.

    Lacks diversity in management.

Average to low pay, no real salary increases year over year.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Spend less time focusing on recruitment and more time on retention because you are losing a lot of great talent.

I worked at M&T Bank full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Good vacation allowance, decent 401K matching, as well as annual retirement contribution from company, company paid lunch on occasion, very nice cafeteria downtown.

    Cons

Incredibly hostile environment fostered by senior level management, no collaboration between co-workers (not a team atmosphere) very poor work-life balance, unrealistic expectations

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management too often rejects ideas without a full understanding of potential benefits - if you want to grow as an organization this practice needs to stop.

I have been working at M&T Bank

    Pros

Benefits were ok for officers but not good for non-officers

    Cons

very poor pay scale and incentive plan, local management clueless to what actually happens in retail branches. Poor leadership skills at area manager level.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

keep in mind the reason the bank has grown as large & as quickly as it has ....... it's employees.

    Pros

You get the work life balance and in certain cities a lot of people know about M&t

    Cons

Depending on the personalities at your Branch they don't empower you to do work on your own they migh micromanage you. With people who are internal they offer them a good wage or good promotional pay. Way too much micromanaging. Poor accountability with other co-workers

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

In training for new hires they should make sure that when there are problems with Staff snaching money out of each other's hand or being rude to one another, they need to have team building meetings

  10.

If you thrive on constant negative feedback and unrealistic expectations, than this is the place for you!

I have been working at M&T Bank full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

The benefits are fair, unfortunately they had been down graded recently.

    Cons

Regional managers don't walk the walk or talk the talk. If you need help you better find it yourself for asking a regional manager for help will come back to bite you! They pretend to care and are hypocrites. If you are a seasoned BS artist, you will thrive here. You are expected to be responsible for everything but you have control of nothing. The sales expectations are way out of line. Products and services are outdated. Understaffed constantly with no help to fill in the gaps. Often there is no time to take lunch, yet it's expected to be logged that you did. Goes against the labor laws.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take a temperature check on local managers to find out what's really going on. When an issue is brought to a regionals attention and they don't want to deal with it they seem to be able to do what ever they want. Nobody is watching them, just the numbers. I have seen many, many top talent leave the bank because of negative treatment and from being held back from opportunities because it's now up to the regional to fill the former position, so you aren't going anywhere unless you leave completely.

I worked at M&T Bank full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Benefits are really good, work schedule is consistent, coworkers are decent depending on branch, stable, small referral goals compared to other banks.

    Cons

Pay is lower than other banks, no communication between upper management and branches, depending on your branch manager you will not move up. Little room for advancement. Managers play favorites. POLITICS!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Promote from within and CROSS TRAIN your employees. Your employee shouldn't have to beg to get training for their position or to do a better job. Stop advancing people based on who they know or whose behind they kissed!
