I have been working at MAC Cosmetics

    Pros

    • employee discount • free makeup of your choice every 6 months • gratis for most if not all upcoming collections • great training • salary •

    Cons

    • scheduling is very strenuous on personal life not to mention favorites get the high sales peak hours • stressful work environment • sales goals can be unrealistic • growth within the company has become harder and harder • never get weekends off
" you sleep, eat, breathe & live MAC all day everyday"

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop hiring outside of the company. Its become disappointing that now it seems easier to walk in with a resume and land a higher position then to already be a MAC employee and try to move up. It never used to be that way.

    Pros

Income. The main reason that people take a survival job is the income needed to cover at least the most basic of necessities, such as food and shelter

    Cons

Multiple Jobs. Because of low wages and limited availability, you may be forced to take multiple jobs to even obtain a livable wage for you and your family.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Remember that old axiom, if life gives you lemons then make lemonade? The same thing goes for being fired/downsized/rightsized. You can put your ego aside and do the best work you can in that survival job while you await better opportunities or you can become bitter and defeated. As one job-seeker stated, i

    Pros

Best makeup tips and training. Doing makeup for MAC was awesome.

    Cons

Trying to keep up with sales goals was not desirable. It took away from the artistry

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Remember that your employees have lives outside of MAC. Just like anything else they need to be able to detach and not Breathe eyeshadow.

    I worked at MAC Cosmetics

    Pros

I have always been an addict of MAC Cosmetics, long before I was an employee of the brand. I love the products and the idea that artistry should come before selling.

    Cons

A company that was once such an amazing brand to work for has become just like every one else, unfortunately. Artistry is almost non-existent as everything is about the bottom line and the sales goals. Although, I realize that selling is clearly very important, it's not what the brand was founded on. Now, rather than having knowledgeable artists working at the counters and stores, there are semi-adequate people who just want to sell - but truly know nothing about the products in which they recommend.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There's really no advice to the managers - it's the people much higher up that need the advice.

I have been working at MAC Cosmetics

    Pros

    * This company, despite what other large corporations do when growing more successful, keeps asking how they can improve as a company, and how we can change what we are doing as a whole to meet the changing needs of our customers.

    * A very creative place to work in sales, highly in demand, and always changing.

    * Great benefits and perks for full time.

    * Great learning opportunities and training classes. Involved trainers, the best of the best, who for the most part, do care about their employees and customers needs.

    * Decent pay for the industry, or the "degree free."

    Cons

    * Vacation time is required to be split up, and cannot be taken over a lump sum of seven days in a row at a time, even if you accrue over two weeks or more with tenure. You also must wait to purchase plane tix etc. until your vacation is approved, which is unfortunately not always at the top of the priority list of most senior retail managers. This can cause many employees frustration and dissatisfaction.

*Tough to get a weekend off, retail schedule requirements are very demanding for employees with children. Be prepared to have open avability, a positive attitude or resilience from time requests being denied.

    * Long days on your feet, and some will suffer from burnout if you don't pace yourself or if you don't have the energy required.

    * Demanding events when you may do over six makeup appointments. It is crucial that you have above par skills at not only applying makeup, but in a timely manner using minimal products so that you are not drained and exhausted, but also so that your customers are not overwhelmed and confused.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Come up with strategies to serve not only your customers, but also the employees more quickly and efficiently. Keep asking questions. The more demands that you make of the staff, the more questions you should be asking. Be more creative and inquisitive about the staff that works for you. Lead with curiosity.
