    The In Crowd.

    Freelance Makeup Artist (Former Employee)
    Monroe, LA

Prosworking with the customers, doing what you love everyday, contributing to AIDS research, the friendships with coworkers and clients, being able to say your a "MAC Girl/Boy", the makeup events and the great work life balance, MAC black is the only uniform requirement (which is awesome), a very fun work environment, the fact people hate you cause you have they job they dream about lol

Consshort term jobs, majority of workers are freelance, very rare to be offered full time position, very few part time positions, no discounts for being a freelance artist, hard to advance in the company, ruthless competition among coworkers to advance in company, and it can take months to actually start working.

Advice to Senior Managementmake room for more pt/ ft positions instead of having thousands of freelancers.

    Great Company

    Freelance Makeup Artist (Current Employee)
    Baton Rouge, LA

ProsGreat Pay,Great Discount, Supportive Environment; Freelance Artist work at any Mac in your State

    ConsInconsistent hours
Freelance hours were great during the holiday (October-December) season 4-5 days a week 9hr shifts (part time) but January-June hours were horrible 3-4 days a month. They favor people with seniority and you have to call consistently to "remind them" you are still interested in hour;better you are at sales the more they will call you too.

Advice to Senior ManagementCommunication is key

Great way to learn artistry esp for newbies

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
    Houston, TX

ProsYou can do makeup diversely (esp in Houston). Learn different makeup techniques and tips.

ConsNot all artist follow the MAC style. Some of the makeup artist wears "scary" makeup....in short drag queen look. So sad. MAC is well-known from it.

Advice to Senior ManagementHigh salary especially for those who have great experienced from the past. Talk to the artists who wear "drag-queen" makeup. They need to stop it!!! Makeup can look creative but still classy NOT trashy!!

ProsCreative environment, always something new, fun, great benefits, decent pay,

ConsRetail hours, lack of advancement opportunities after a certain point. No work life balance, hard if you have a family

Advice to Senior ManagementGive your managers room to manage. Always explain the why and be respectful.

    Fun!

    Freelance Makeup Artist (Current Employee)
    Chicago, IL

ProsOverall, the pay is great and I love working here.

ConsHard to be accepted when freelance.

Advice to Senior ManagementSometimes they like to micromanage and there is a bit of a "clique" atmosphere, but everyone is generally very accepting and great.

    Great on resume

    Retail Manager (Current Employee)
    East Detroit, MI

ProsTheir education is great. The basis of the company is positive, fish based. Free make up, huge discounts, you're never bored. The benefits are awesome.

ConsWork life balance? None. District managers? Not positive unless their bosses are involved. Generally hypocritical. No matter how well you do you're constantly pushed many times at completely unrealistic goals.

Advice to Senior ManagementPractice what you preach to managers. Fun? Never. Always 'feedback' rarely rarely positive if ever.

    A roller coaster ride

    Anonymous (Current Employee)

ProsGreat product, benefits and cool dresscode.
Lots of gratis and nice discount. Made lots of friends. Sometimes can be very fun.

ConsOutrageous sales goals. Always understaffed. Customers are often rude and demanding. Upper management tells you that they are ther to support you, but that is not true. No matter how hard you work, nothing is ever good enough.

Advice to Senior ManagementReally pay attention to what your employees need. There needs to be a seroous housecleaning in HR. Employees cannot rely on them and any complaints or concerns you express results in retaliation from upper management.

I have worked every position from full time to retail manager and in multiple states and markets for the brand

    Retail Manager (Current Employee)

ProsWorking for MAC can be so fun and inspiring! It's creative and you get an opportunity to touch people's lives. You get great benefits including generous vacation time and an excellent discount. The pay is better than decent, even for part-time employees.

ConsLeadership is inconsistent and work-life balance is really difficult. They expect a lot from employees and are not very flexible with scheduling. It's very difficult to work for MAC and have a family. It is also very stressful most of the time. Huge disconnect between corporate and field employees

Advice to Senior ManagementBe more realistic with your expectations. People are not set up for success which makes for a stressed team all the way down. There are way too many focuses and not enough support. Your employees are expected to do it all without much help, while juggling sales goals, paperwork, coaching, etc. As people move up, they get more stressed and you can see their spirit taking a huge hit. For a company with so many women, you surprisingly still have a lot of work to do making it a family-friendly place to work.

It is a great career path if you are interested in makeup and management.

    Third Key (Current Employee)
    Washington, DC

ProsThere is always someone that will become a mentor, regardless if it is in artistry, training and or development into management. MAC is number 1 in many facets of the beauty industry, so to be part of this energy is always great!

ConsOnce you are a Retail Manager, your career might become plateau unless you are willing to move to a different region. It feels like too many veterans and not enough positions. But, then again if you are great in your role, you could always shuffle to different and higher volume stores/ counters and still get a pay raise.

Advice to Senior ManagementI am in management, and i love my upper management. I treat others the way I want to be treated. That just is by luck if you are surrounded by well educated, smart people that want the best for you.
