    Pros

The gratis and 60% employee discount are amazing. However, do keep in mind that many people work for months, even over a year, without receiving the "staff card" necessary to even use your employee discount! The artistry is amazing. I have been to a makeup school that I paid thousands of dollars to go to, but the skill I gained there dwarf in comparison to the beauty skills I gained here. The people are friendly (art least at my counter), and it really feels like a team environment, for the most part.

    Cons

MAC is incredibly sales-orientated. You are expected to average about a $45 sale for every customer you help. This can be incredibly difficult when a customer comes in to buy just one item that they know they need. There have definitely been times when I know I have been forced to get pushy, and my customer service has suffered as a result of my sales goals. It's a high-pressure job. Don't expect to get hired if you don't have any retail or sales experience. They look for outgoing, competitive people. Makeup skills come second to that. At Nordstrom locations, you may originally be hired on as a "Beauty On Call". This means that you are just a Nordstrom employee, and not a MAC employee, and so you will not get any gratis, MAC training, or even a guaranteed number of hours per week. I started off this way. The goal of any BOC is to get hired on permanently, and I was able to do it through incredibly high sales numbers, the only real way to get hired. It's best to do this quickly. I did it by busting my behind and taking very short lunches. Many people can go for several months, even years, without getting hired on, and eventually quit out of frustration, or move to a different makeup counter. My advice is to shine as bright as you can from the very start. Also, be ready to be expected to push Nordstrom credit cards, Nordstrom events, and MAC events. You are going to have to make a lot of cold-calls, easily my least favorite part of the job.

    Advice to Management

In the several months that I have been at MAC, I have seen a complete turnover of management. The best managers I have had have been those who work hard on the floor with the rest of us, and perhaps spend a couple hours in the back, not all day. However, not all managers are like this. Also, management definitely tends to pick favorites. This is a major problem. I think also that MAC management and Nordstrom management need to work more on their communication with each other, so as to better convey the goals to us, the sales team.

    Pros

Lots of artist training, good pay

    Cons

The only way to move up to get salaried and benefits is to become a manager. Moving up in the artistry world technically means nothing, and you're still broke.

    Advice to Management

Managers and Assistant Managers and 3rd Keys should rule with the same tone. Too many cooks in the kitchen saying different things and making different off-the-record rules. Very hard to know what's OK and what's not when youre listening to four different people with four different sets of rules.
