I have been working at MAC Cosmetics as a contractor (less than an year)

    Pros

You learn a lot, and the team is very helpful. I love the location I freelance for, and my team manager. I would follow him to any location.

    Cons

If you are new... it may take effort to get in. Freelancers don't get training. So, study the website for knowledge, and ask questions to learn.

I have been working at MAC Cosmetics (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Having the opportunity to work with a lot of creative individuals. A fun atmosphere to be able to be artistic and innovative.

    Cons

The pressure and criticism from management. Working with people that have big egos. Not much training for any position. Much of what you learn is through your own research on your own time.

I worked at MAC Cosmetics part-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

MAC is a great place to grow your career if you can withstand retail which can be rough. Wonderful coworkers and management as well as benefits and discounts. Great company all around to stay with. Solid ideals and job security.

    Cons

Retail life balance can be difficult. And, advancement can be competitive, so be flexible, and work very hard for what you want.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I have been working at MAC Cosmetics part-time

    Pros

    helping clients with make-up, pay

    Cons

difficult/demanding/racist clients, adequate training doesn't exist - it involves the "trainer" racing through power point slides, upper mgmt is lazy & uneducated about how to properly manage people, coworkers have DISGUSTING habits (imagine picking up all of the used make-up applicators and tissues from a trash bin without the bag b/c they didn't bother to put one there before throwing all of their trash in it), your own make-up is decided by upper mgmt, NO GRATIS (!!!!!!!!!!!!) at my store, too many micromanagers, sleazy coworkers that schmooze with the clients and work the room until they have overtaken it, too much of a focus on being able to aggressively push products on people so each transaction is $50+ to make sure that your average units of sale doesn't decrease, you are expected to do 20 jobs at once in 20 seconds and if they're not done in the most amazing way possible, you will be yelled at on the floor - I've never felt so demeaned and discriminated against in my life.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

A college degree should be required for anyone who wants to be a manager. Managers need to stop undermining the make-up authority of their employees. Also, managers need to stop letting certain employees hog all of the clients in the store. There needs to be A LOT more diversity within the company, such as hiring more asians, whites, middle easterners, europeans, mature people, etc. The motto of MAC is not properly represented in its hiring practices.

I worked at MAC Cosmetics part-time

    Pros

The discount is amazing. The products are very good.

    Cons

There is no training, you're kind of just thrown out there and other artists don't have time to train you because it's always really busy.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Upper management isnt present most times. It would be helpful to have someone on the floor with you training you when you first start.
