I have been working at MAC Cosmetics

    Pros

    * This company, despite what other large corporations do when growing more successful, keeps asking how they can improve as a company, and how we can change what we are doing as a whole to meet the changing needs of our customers.

    * A very creative place to work in sales, highly in demand, and always changing.

    * Great benefits and perks for full time.

    * Great learning opportunities and training classes. Involved trainers, the best of the best, who for the most part, do care about their employees and customers needs.

    * Decent pay for the industry, or the "degree free."

    Cons

    * Vacation time is required to be split up, and cannot be taken over a lump sum of seven days in a row at a time, even if you accrue over two weeks or more with tenure. You also must wait to purchase plane tix etc. until your vacation is approved, which is unfortunately not always at the top of the priority list of most senior retail managers. This can cause many employees frustration and dissatisfaction.

*Tough to get a weekend off, retail schedule requirements are very demanding for employees with children. Be prepared to have open avability, a positive attitude or resilience from time requests being denied.

    * Long days on your feet, and some will suffer from burnout if you don't pace yourself or if you don't have the energy required.

    * Demanding events when you may do over six makeup appointments. It is crucial that you have above par skills at not only applying makeup, but in a timely manner using minimal products so that you are not drained and exhausted, but also so that your customers are not overwhelmed and confused.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Come up with strategies to serve not only your customers, but also the employees more quickly and efficiently. Keep asking questions. The more demands that you make of the staff, the more questions you should be asking. Be more creative and inquisitive about the staff that works for you. Lead with curiosity.

I worked at MAC Cosmetics full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Incredible education and training (both classroom and hands on). Product, product, and more product. You will wind up owning so much product through the employee gratis program and the hefty discount. Product updates support artistry and sales initiatives, making selling easy. Trainers are amazing. Benefits are crazy good.

    Cons

It becomes a bit of a cult where you have to drink the Kool Aid, and if you don't, you can't sit with the cool kids. Despite being a professional brand glossy with a counter-culture veneer, you will find working at MAC feels as stuffy and two-faced as working in a small office with white wine Fridays. You can grow with the company, but only if you bend your arms and legs ever so carefully to fit their mold. Integrity is lost in most work places in the modern era. You can give your all, your passion, your commitment, your belief to this company but they will not care about you or your health if you don't buy into their twisted system. Management tactics are crazy. You are just a number. The environment and charity stuff? Another part of the veneer.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

What's important are your people, the people that represent the brand, your workers. Invest in them more fully, be understanding when there are medical emergencies. Stop playing high school. If you're going to talk/gossip about your employees, do it discreetly and off the clock. Make room for more diplomacy and direct communication. Cut back on words that serve two purposes like double edged swords.
