Former Employee – worked at MAC Cosmetics full-time for more than 8 years
Pros – There are so many great people and opportunities with the brand. I was able to literally travel the world with the company over the 8 years worked for them. Trainings are fun, a lot of free products, and experiences with people that will challenge you skills and thinking.
Cons – As a manager there is no work life balance. Especially in a freestanding store. Staying late and coming early is an expectation (in the region I worked in) and there is a micromanagement mentality. After receiving highly 'effective effective' reviews and being promoted 5 times in my first 5 years, you eventually can reach a plateau. When this happens new expectations are formed and 'highly effective' becomes simply 'effective.' When you are capable of doing great things with stores and teams the expectation gets higher. I left feeling drained and so overstressed with life. When your doctor offers you paxil in order to have to deal with upper management, it's time to check out. Although I wouldn't have changed by 8 years for the world. I learned the do and don't of being a good manager. I know MAC was the hardest job I have ever had. You have to make everyone happy: employees, mid level mgmt, sr level mgmt, training teams, sales operations, and customers.
Advice to Senior Management – Walk the walk and talk the talk. It is easy to give instruction on what someone should do, but the unfortunate reality is that when you aren't doing it, you lose all credibility. Example: succession planning employees is the job of a retail manager, but I can't remember the last time I was coached and developed.

Pros – Great glamorous company, fabulous people. Good career opportunities if you are willing to work hard.
Cons – Not too much sparetime. You 'live' for the company and they kind of expect that of you.

Current Employee – been working at MAC Cosmetics full-time for more than a year
Pros – Artistry. The costomers. Wages are decent.
Cons – Women in makeup retail tend to be extremely bitchy, and nothing but gossip happens around a counter. this is extrememely difficult to handle when it is the management of the counter perpetuating the gossip.
Advice to Senior Management – Managers need to have checks and balances.

Current Employee – been working at MAC Cosmetics as a contractor for less than a year
Pros – Excellent pay when hours are available.
Time flies while doing make overs.
Opportunity to build portfolio and gain loyal clients.
Cons – No work hours.
Can go months without work regardless of how good you are, how many stores you visit and how many phone calls you make asking for hours.
Favoritism based solely upon looks and connections.
You could sell your butt off for weeks and it will go unnoticed but the moment you have a slow day management will make you feel like you're not good enough.
No gratis which sucks considering that freelancers work just as hard if not harder than most full and part timers.
Advice to Senior Management – Give Freelancers a mandatory 10-20 hours a week so they can survive. Send freelancers a newsletter once a month that informs them about the stores in their area that are hiring for full and part time positions so they can have an opportunity for advancement.
