I worked at MACTEC full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

They had a great group of people to work with and they valued family-life balance. Hard work was always appreciated.

    Cons

Salary increases were often meager, and it didn't seem like managers marketed their staff as well as they could have in order to maintain utilization.

I worked at MACTEC full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

The managers allow flexible work hours. Each office kind of works like a small entity of its own... so not much micro managing happens and even at a mid level, you are given the freedom to work on the project as per your convenience.

    Cons

Not much options to grow. You get repeated kind of work and you get typecasted. Too many offices in small areas starts the fight between offices.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Increase sharing of work between offices. and place office more strategically. you font need 7 offices in a state like Florida.

Employees, including Professional Engineers were micro-managed to the point of revolt.

    I worked at MACTEC

    Pros

Great salary, high professional competence, training available, software support excellent, and safety conscious.
The professionals were among the best in the country.

    Cons

Micromanaged, poor business and contract judgement, poor communication from top manangement, criticized for performance over budget or under budget.
Each week and each month, each quarter and at the end of each year, budgets were reviewed and evaluated. If an office did much better than expected, then the office had to have a live conference with regional management to explain why they did so much better than predicted. If they did not meet their budget for one month, they were equally criticized for failing to predict acccuartely. As a result, offices that did well, hid hundreds of thousands of profits, so that they could pull out the extra profits if needed during a poor month. At more than one episode, the professionals all sent out their resumes and were on the verge of obtaining new employment to obtain leverage with top management to change their micromanagement techniques.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Now that the company has merged, perhaps the environment has changed and should be re-evaluated. Laying off ALL Managment (10%) of the national work force in 2008? Is that just insane?

    I worked at MACTEC

    Pros

Not bad if you don't mind getting underpaid, have low ambition, and don't really care.

    Cons

Technical incompetance at all levels promotes diffusion of accountability and "poor" client service.
    Senior.middle management clearly delusional.
Overall, working at MACTEC should be considered as a "risk" to the individual's professional reputation.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Find a new job, or else get to know what the project level staff is doing.

I have been working at MACTEC

    Pros

People are really nice but have been here forever. Constantly fighting that old school mentality. The even dress from the 80"s.

    Cons

Poor technology and lack of IT support. Everything is from the 80's. Lack of flexibility to work from home.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Do something with the data given. Patterns are everywhere. More transparency. Less secrecy. Stop laying off people.
