Current Employee – been working at MAKO Surgical full-time for less than a year
Pros – Surgical robotics is a very interesting area to work on. It is a combination of robotics, visualization, medical image analysis, implants, user interface, etc.
Cons – The company is not treating the employees well enough. Engineers are seldom appreciated in terms of compensation and benefits. Upper management often makes unachievable goals and blames everyone when we fail to achieve them.
Advice to Senior Management – Listen to employees. Don't be afraid to change old habits -- many of them are bad.

Former Employee – worked at MAKO Surgical full-time for more than a year
Pros – Fast paced, innovative product, challenging work environment. They've assembled a great team of field experts. The culture is more about getting the system right than selling the product.
Cons – Poor business acumen of senior leadership. Costs are out of control because no one watches them. The teams don't necessarily work well together. Only the operations department seem to have their act together, probably because this is the only one with top to bottom leadership that understands how to run a business.
Advice to Senior Management – Get costs under control

Former Employee – worked at MAKO Surgical full-time for more than a year
Pros – Fantastic technology. One of a kind device in the market place. Opportunity to sell at the highest levels of medical capital equipment. You are really in business and territory development where you are creating markets. Opportunity to make more $$ than almost anywhere else in medical device. If you work hard, you will learn a TON.
Cons – Senior management is clueless as to how to actually sell robots. They want to get ideas from YOU on how to sell their system, so don't go there expecting to "learn" anything. Their ideas are all regurgitated from the reps. It ain't Intuitive where the managers have done it and-where they teach you how to close deals. So be prepared, and very experienced in prospecting and capital equipment if you go there. Also, competition hates Mako, and are vicious. Company is not profitable, so the pressure is on immediately when you start. Benefits are horrible.
Advice to Senior Management – Hire managers who have experience selling capital to hospitals-not just imaging to doctor's offices-and who understand the process. Keep sales force small until you are profitable enough to afford a larger sales force.

Current Employee – been working at MAKO Surgical
Pros – Be a part of the fastest growing company in North America (Deloitte Fast 500 2011). MAKO offers a competitive salary, great PTO (paid time off) offering, competive benefits (employee stock purchase program, 401K, medical, yearly bonus opportunity for all), comprehensive yearly review of performance.
Location, location, location......it's February and 80 degrees outside.....
Cons – With the rampant growth comes a fair share of stress. However, having come from other industries that are constantly downsizing (layoffs), the stress of growth is refreshing and stable. I may have to work as hard as 2 people but it's not because my friend was just laid off....
Advice to Senior Management – Just keep this bullet train on its track and we'll be sitting alongside the likes of Biomet, Stryker, Zimmer, DePuy, and Smith & Nephew in less than a decade. Who wouldn't want to be a part of this? Anyone? .....

Current Employee – been working at MAKO Surgical
Pros – better than unemployment. great technology. good corporate location. good short term investment of their stock. part of their facility is nice, part of office environment is very old
Cons – HORRIBLE senior management. All are ex-GE guys, who couldn't cut it there. They know NOTHING about the surgical implant piece of their business. They want 60+ hours a week work out of you. NO support what so ever. Very sleazy environment. Will remind you of a used car lot dealership mentality.

Current Employee – been working at MAKO Surgical
Pros – Young growing company...with all the growing pains you might expect. Fast paced "no sympathy" work environment. Lots of opportunity to work hard develop new products.
Cons – Good luck figuring out how to get promoted. Poor communication between management and non-management. Political and "CYA" culture. Poor recognition. Lack of support where needed. No motivation for continued hard work. Dismal work/life balance.
Advice to Senior Management – Listen to employees and address their needs. Be realistic about things.
