    Pros

Great medical benefits, good retirement plan and part of teachers retirement system, some training but selective only if management likes you.

    Cons

Horrible politics, people have their own agendas, promote internally at lower levels based on who you know and not your actual technical ability, information systems and technology slow to adapt, hire consultants to fix and solve complex issues because employees lack knowledge.

    Advice to Management

CEOs and management problems. I personally was a military junior officer and this institution lacks true leadership. MD Anderson needs to recruit and promote people without personal agendas.

    Pros

M D Anderson has excellent benefits; employees are eligible to retire with full benefits.

    Cons

Senior management positions filled with external candidates, qualified internal candidates overlooked, resulting lack of familiarity with basic processes/leadership insecurities.

    Advice to Management

Promote from within, establish mandatory orientation inclusive of checklist and coaching for new leaders, assess their progress on monthly basis.

    Pros

Internationally recognized as a premier cancer center of excellence
    Relatively stable work environment
    Friendly co-workers
    Emphasize training and development
    Generous work life balance
    Growing organization
    Challenging project work
Lots of important projects going on in a number of areas
Minimal to no travel - with a few exceptions for some groups
    Fair base salary structure
Average opportunities for advancement - certainly not up or out
Manage a wide range of people with varying work experiences and motivations
Individuals interested in working hard and making an impact have a good shot at doing so
Never lets organizational challenges get in the way of providing top notch patient care and cutting edge research

    Cons

Above all one must learn to navigate the politics which are far more difficult than in more progressive organizations that have flattened out over time
Large executive and senior management staff for the size of the organization make it tricky to get things done at times
Bonus structure promotes mediocrity and stability over meritocracy
Over reliance on an army of consultants
Redundancy on similar efforts due to politics and poor coordination
Small amount of self promotion and vulchering of work
Things move much slower than in other organizations that place a premium on speed
Struggling to become a more data driven organization - working hard at it though

    Advice to Management

Flatten out and push more authority and decision making to the front lines, while standing behind the decisions being made.
