I have been working at MD Anderson Cancer Center full-time

    Pros

Internationally recognized as a premier cancer center of excellence Relatively stable work environment Friendly co-workers Emphasize training and development Generous work life balance Growing organization Challenging project work Lots of important projects going on in a number of areas Minimal to no travel - with a few exceptions for some groups Fair base salary structure Average opportunities for advancement - certainly not up or out Manage a wide range of people with varying work experiences and motivations Individuals interested in working hard and making an impact have a good shot at doing so Never lets organizational challenges get in the way of providing top notch patient care and cutting edge research

    Cons

Above all one must learn to navigate the politics which are far more difficult than in more progressive organizations that have flattened out over time Large executive and senior management staff for the size of the organization make it tricky to get things done at times Bonus structure promotes mediocrity and stability over meritocracy Over reliance on an army of consultants Redundancy on similar efforts due to politics and poor coordination Small amount of self promotion and vulchering of work Things move much slower than in other organizations that place a premium on speed Struggling to become a more data driven organization - working hard at it though

    Advice to Management

Flatten out and push more authority and decision making to the front lines, while standing behind the decisions being made.

I have been working at MD Anderson Cancer Center full-time

    Pros

The patients are SO awesome! They keep you going many days. A lot of the staff are awesome and great at what they do also. You can learn a lot. The talent and effort to work together among a vast majority of peers are excellent. I love when I see people coming together to help a patient that may have special complications.

    Cons

It seems as if you can be trapped into a certain type of underling role with no hope to really surfacing if you're ambitious.

    Advice to Management

Respect is critical to people. When people don't feel respected or rewarded and constantly feel as if they cannot do anything right it takes a toll on morale.
