    Pros

Exciting projects, good compensation and bonuses, mostly good teamwork

    Cons

Career progression almost non-existent unless you are a) an engineer, b) male!

    Advice to Management

Consider investing more time in face-to-face with employees; less hierarchy could be beneficial.

  2. Great company to work for with great people.

    I worked at MDA Corporation

    Pros

The work is interesting and challenging. The people there are wonderful to work with, very competent and enthusiastic. It is generally a very supportive environment. Hours are flexible.

    Cons

Work load can be very high. No overtime pay, just bank the flex and take time off later. Pay is on the low side for the industry for most staff. Not many options for career growth.

    Advice to Management

Consider all employees equally important, they are all giving equal effort. Find opportunities for growth for all. Give decent pay raises to all.

    Pros

Wonderful smart creative people in the working ranks.

    Cons

A sycophantic culture where a bunch of yes men surround an out of touch CEO. These yes men have all been bred to follow detailed instructions and are not expected or allowed to think for themselves. Those senior managers that do try to think are cut off from the pack and left isolated as punishment. Understanding that it is a business, all decisions are made only with regard to the balance sheet. Company policy is that it is preferable to replace a departed worker at a higher salary than it is to pay good existing employees close to market rates. The HR department is toothless and cowed by the CEO. Micro-management by the CEO has recently become so severe that many of his senior managers have literally given up. Strategic growth by acquisition is a very good strategy and working well for the most part. However, executive management is "gutting" the existing business by reducing costs to the point where employees are doing the jobs of 2-3 people on wages that are in most cases 20-30% below industry norms. This is leading to the departure of the company's talent. It has certainly killed innovation within HQ. A lack of funding has also killed the R&D department. The CEO has created a culture of distrust where none of the senior executives communicate and the hoarding of information has become the norm. This leads to very negative consequences for the business and a very inefficient operation where work is always duplicated. The executive management all appear to dislike each other and work in isolation. This is a company that requires a major internal overhaul before it goes off a cliff. Despite the rising stock price, the board of directors should take notice of these internal goings on before it is irreversible.

    Advice to Management

Retire before the ride ends badly. Advice to the board is that they had better quickly take stock of what is going on before the operations decay to a point of no return.

    Pros

Space industry can be really exciting/stimulating if that's your cup of tea. You could get to work side-by-side with astronauts and other exceptional types.

    Cons

Space industry is very risk-averse and there's lots of bureaucracy. Cost-plus contracts mean people don't have incentive to really innovate; structure starts to self-perpetuate. In long run this makes the company less competitive. The robotics/human space flight division is not the moneymaker in the company so can be subject to the whims of the larger market.

    Advice to Management

The excitement of working with astronauts etc. isn't always enough to keep people motivated. Work hard to foster a well-rounded culture or continue to suffer brain-drain.

    Pros

Small company with a good atmosphere depending on your position and location. The workers seem to treat each other like friends and did happy hours together often.

    Cons

Some people have more control than they need. An accountant seemed in control over contracts, Quality Assurance, human resources, information technology and other portions of the business. There were instances of clock watching (by non manager accountant) even when time off was approved by the manager. The division manager seemed out of touch with the Houston offices. Pay was not great and raises were not very high most times.

    Advice to Management

Communicate with employees better, add tuition benefit.

MDA Federal will higher individuals right out of college.

    Cons

Remote Sensing positions are a joke and the work is sweatshop like in nature.

Find ways to better the working environment for new employees and there will be less turnover.

I worked at MDA Corporation full-time

    Pros

Good place to gain some initial experience and to make some friends. Good for conservative people who like a stable, but slightly below average income.

    Cons

When it comes to personal growth, compensation or office culture, MDA is not the place to be. The company is stingy.

    Advice to Management

Stop being so stingy and treat your employees like people, not like resources to be maximized.
