I worked at MDS Pharma part-time for more than a year

    Pros

Close knit environment that was very enjoyable.

    Cons

Didn't have the ability to move around as much as a larger pharma company. Basically you did your time so you could get to big pharma.

    I worked at MDS Pharma

    Pros

    *Good people
*Lab and Clinics were high quality
    *Technical knowledge
    *Service offerings was strong
    *Supportive of work/life balance
    *Had nice offices

    Cons

*No commitment to real process improvement
*Not forthcoming on strategies and approaches
    *Poor training
*Lack of commitment to resource properly

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Sorry to see the company split up and sold. The labs (Toronto, NJ) were nice environments to work in and the people in KoP were friendly. Felt the board gave up on the company but still tried to sell the "we are strong" message.

    I worked at MDS Pharma

    Pros

Hard working knowledgeable scientists and staff; friendly atmosphere; approachable local management team. Modern facility with state of the art equipment.

    Cons

Senior management team not very knowledgeable about the work performed at our sitel there were various lines of service but they only seemed to think there was one. This affected the marketing effort and the business was significantly undersold and therefore underperformed - very frustrating when you have staff keen to work hard, do a good job. Many staff were disilusioned with the pay for performance package. Some activities seemed to be duplicated at various sites& expertise was therefore duplicated - seemed like different sites/business units competed for the same business

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Learn the business of ALL the sites to better promote services offered and therefore maximise potential. Reduce apparent duplication of effort/competition between different sites/business units.
Establish specialized sales staff for selected, highly specialized lines of service so that sales efforts are targeted, focussed and hopefully more effective.
Since the business is up for sale, this could be moot.

    I worked at MDS Pharma

    Pros

If you need experience this can be a stepping stone. But be warned thats all there is to it. The people you work with are nice. Some uppermangement people know and do their jobs well, and are very people oriented. But if you go above them, then they become process driven robots.

    Cons

Top management ee people as commodities. (It was actually said a blurted out by a top management personnel) Process driven. Does not award talent. Pidgeon-hole you in your role, and doesnt see the employee as anything beyond that.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take human talent seriously. People are not commodities. It take more time and money to obtain new recruits than to keep current employees statisfied. If employees have interest in other functions of the business, and they have the talent and drive for it. Develop it! Dont just let it go to waste.

Constant tension between achieving bottom line results and producing quality work

    I worked at MDS Pharma

    Pros

After some pushing with my immediate supervisor the work at home arrangements made the hectic work environment do-able and allowed for some work life balance although working in a global environment and having a blackberry, you are ALWAYS available.

    Cons

The company was clearly gearing up for a sale in the past few years as they got rid of the old and on boarded the new at a lower wage.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Increased communication with the employees about their fate in regards to layoffs would have been much appriciated and to decrease the severance packages for Director level and below at the last minute was a harsh good bye.

    I worked at MDS Pharma

    Pros

This had a very friendly work environment. In addition to the friendly working environment, the people were very helpful staff.

    Cons

There was unfortunately, not a lot of room for growth. Although employees were experienced, the opportunities for growth were very limited.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Ensure that deserved staff members are given equal opportunity for advancemnt. Ask team members their opinion and implement some of their ideas.

    Pros

People work together as a team, focus on improvement and problem solving, mutual respect across teams, low turnover, genuine job enjoyment

    Cons

No future as business was sold. There aren't many downsides that are shared by most other companies - challenges with multiple business units

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Too many system changes at once
