I have been working at MDU Resources full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Excellent compensation. Lots of perks on the pay and benefits side of things. Co-workers are great to be around, and I enjoy working with them.

    Cons

Totally out of my element. Was deceived by upper management of what I was I hired to do, and what I actually do. Bad management with no direction. They like to delegate even the most minute tasks. This place has politics like I've never seen.

    Advice to Management

There is a "revolving door" at the Minot branch. A lot of people have moved on in my short time here, and there's more to follow. You need to clean house and take care of the management issue.

    Pros

Walking out the door for the last time

    Cons

Good ol boys club. Not in with the "in" crowd you're out of luck Pay is low and management prides themselves on holding a scheduled raise to save the company money. Micro managed. Managers love to punish employees and love to belittle you when you ask a question. Demand you work overtime when they don't know how to manage people so they're constantly low on staffing. It's a revolving door there.

    Advice to Management

Pull your head out of your butt and learn to manage people. Walk the talk you spew on a daily basis.

    Pros

Some of the best reasons to work at MDU Resources is the great coworkers and the fact that it is one of the best paying employers in Bismarck, ND.

    Cons

The corporate mantra is "With Integrity". Unfortunately, as with many large organizations, this philosophy is sometimes hard to find in the day to day operations.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your employees. In many cases the real value of an employee is not that they can do the day to day work but in their opinions and ideas.

    Pros

Benefits are really great. 1/3 off utility bill, 3 weeks vacation to start, good medical, dental, vision insurance with little out of pocket expenses.

    Cons

Very little promotion potential, professional development. Focus is on shareholder value and not employee morale or satisfaction. Definitely a top down organization.

    Advice to Management

If you focus on the employees, they will be happy they work for you and will work that much harder for you.

I worked at MDU Resources full-time

    Pros

    Loved my work, great coworkers

    Cons

Awful local management-gettnig blamed for the issues and losing credit for your successes gets REALLY old. I learned that the rule to moving up at that place must be "Do nothing, delegate everything, and know nothing about the jobs you manage"

    Advice to Management

Find your bad managers and supervisors and replace them FAST. They are the reason you have a sinking ship in the Baaken. They are right under your nose if you look.

    Pros

Mostly stable, median wages (not bad, not great).

    Cons

lack of promotional opportunites, high performance not rewarded fairly, overall just a big corporation with the corporate issues.

    Advice to Management

Don't be so sluggish with decisions and communications.

    Pros

Depending on what department you are in, you might have a good experience or a bad one. Benefits are as good as anywhere you'll find. They have a strong level of integrity and run business the right way.

    Cons

Somewhat of an old boys club. If you're in the circle you're going to be groomed for success, if not, you're out of luck. Advancement more geared to engineers than other specialists.

    Advice to Management

Treat everyone fairly, and look for the hidden stars within the company. There are a lot of people with good ideas that never get heard.
