Employees wear many hats and work hard, but management decisions are questionable, at best.

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsChallenging environment. From a technical perspective, I have worked on a broad array of projects and learned a lot. Great work, good pay and decent work life balance.

ConsManagement decisions are slow to reality and cause excessive losses to pile up before they decide that things are going bad and that they need to cut back. Then, by the time they cut back, the business turns around and they need to ramp up again and they are slow to ramp up and lose business because they can't ramp fast enough. Then, it cycles again. Never ending.

Advice to Senior ManagementMake decisions more quickly.

ProsCompetitive base salaries and opportunities to work in Asia.

ConsReview the balance sheet over the past 5 years particularly at cash/equivalents and debt and decide for yourself if these are good trends and did they create acceptable value as a result. It's a very political environment so if you're not good at that sort of thing… This place has gone through waves of leaders since leaving Monsanto from a German utility company that knew nothing about the business and ran it into the ground to a VC that put a tyrant of a CEO in place who extracted every dollar of value for his own personal gain while destroying marketshare and the company's reputation to a rookie CEO with a money losing solar strategy.

Focus only on short term goals

    Process Engineer (Former Employee)
    Sherman, TX

ProsGood and strong R&D. The pay was decent. Quarterly incentives used to be good. Most of the people are good to work with. Good work life balance.

ConsManagement focus is only on short term goals. Need to improve on quality. Quality is not on par with the Japanese companies. Not much opportunities for career advancement. Most of the manufacturing has been shifted to Asia. No long term vision.

Advice to Senior ManagementFocus on long term vision. Improve quality.

    General Feedback

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsExcellent technical R&D leadership resources. Culture transformation is a positive. Company has strong core of technical leadership to help drive roadmap.

ConsSolar Materials division of corporation may have the biggest upside but the weakest management. Recent changes may be an improvement but yet to be seen. P&L prospective is too dominant to allow efficient development of the technologies and those whom challenge status quo and the poor decision for the organization on a whole are not embraced or encouraged to bring constructive counter argument. There are plenty of senior managers still remaining whom do not understand the technology they involved with and seldom consult those who do in critical technology and operational related decisions making. Likely organizational inefficiencies will continue in the matrixed organization with the current senior management. Probably need to move out some of those Solyandra managers that they picked up in the last year would be a good start.

Advice to Senior ManagementEmbrace counter argument and encourage data driven decision making instead of short term wins to meet a weekly/monthly reports. Cycle times of the technology involved are discrete in nature and do not fill into weekly and monthly reports well for proper charterization.

Pays well, works you hard, and R&D is infallible

    Process Engineer (Former Employee)
    Saint Peters, MO

ProsIf you are based in St. Peters the pay is nice. Coastal wages in the heartland. On the solar side there are some neat new technologies they are working on.

ConsWork life balance is awful. With overseas facilities about 12 hours ahead of us, you are on the phone late at night and early in the morning.
At the time I was there the R&D team was still inexperienced with certain processes and they were not open to listening to non PHD engineers who did have the experience. Management supported the superiority of R&D.
Very high turn over in corporate office.

Advice to Senior ManagementI know times are lean, but think beyond the next quarter when making decisions. Engineers without PHD's can help solve manufacturing issues too.

Decent salary but near zero benefits.

    Technician (Former Employee)
    Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia)

Pros- Some managers are helpful and accommodating.
    - Bare minimum tools are provided for the job but accuracy of the tool is not good enough.

Cons- Some vendors takes a long time to solve problems and some even can't. Management will not allowed to change vendors unless can source a cheaper vendor.
    - Need to work on weekends and even on holidays.

Advice to Senior ManagementKindly promote healthy work life balance.

    Fairly good place to work.

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsInternational travel opportunities, career opportunities, fairly laid back work environment, close Finance team

ConsSome would say location, old building that needs to be updated, inconsistencies in some policies

It used to be a great place to work

    Technician (Former Employee)
    Saint Peters, MO

ProsIt was well run 15+ yrs. ago. They paid well, benefits were good, and management was well liked and respected. The only pros as of 2012 was work schedule and location.

ConsThe company has moved most manufacturing jobs overseas or eliminated jobs from downsizing.
There is very little capital invested maintaining durable goods.
Management decisions were made to make money during the short term with no regard to long term consequences.

Advice to Senior ManagementYou need to move HQ to either Asia or Europe since the American facilities have all but been closed down.

    Intense travel

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsSalaries are at or above the industry average. Benefits are comparable or better as well. Salaried positions receive stock options as an added incentive. Many very talented people in the organization. A real opportunity to see the world.

ConsThe travel requirements can be intense for many positions as there is not a lot of manufacturing done in the US.

Don't work here unless you're desperate

    Process Engineer (Former Employee)
    Pasadena, TX

ProsThe pay is pretty good for an engineer, though slightly inferior to others on the channel. It's almost larceny that operators are paid >30% over market yet engineers don't despite not a huge difference in pay, especially when OT is offered to operators.

ConsThe silicon market for next two years (2012-2014) sucks so layoffs have occurred and will recur. They force the engineers to work out of trailers right next to the Operating facility which handles hydrogen and silane gas which are both explosive. Remember BP Texas City in 2005. The trailers are falling apart and very noisy and hot in summer. Huge safety issues with high injury rate in the last few years and large "we didn't invent it here" philosophy. Most engineers are H1-B so communications in English are very difficult and they are very careful to not ask too many questions. In other words, indentured servitude. Turnover is rampant like Taco Bell.

Advice to Senior ManagementInstead of pretending to back new and creative ideas necessary for the plant service, i.e. lip service, be willing to take risks. Also, hire competent experienced engineers who know what the hell they're doing instead of green grunts who blunder through helplessly in a dangerous process.
